Success Story: Sustainable Salmo plan helps the Village’s work towards reducing GHG emissions

In 2016, The Village of Salmo, BC, initiated Sustainable Salmo, a planning process to update the Village’s Official Community Plan (OCP). The Village of Salmo’s approach involved merging their OCP with Integrated Community Sustainability Planning (ICSP). Sustainable Salmo also incorporated the results of the Strategic Community Energy and Emissions Plan (SCEEP). B.C. is on the road to 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2040

The Province of British Columbia has announced its intention to require the sale of all new light-duty cars and trucks to be zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) by the year 2040. Legislation is expected to be introduced next spring and will include targets of 10% ZEV sales by 2025, and 30% by 2030. The announcement includes continued investments in charging infrastructure and vehicle incentives to make ZEVs more affordable and convenient.

Join the Emotive Campaigns Network, BC’s electric vehicle outreach and engagement community

Interested in electric vehicle outreach and education in your community? A new Emotive Campaigns Network provides a hub where communities can collaborate on how best to deliver local and regional electric vehicle campaigns and discuss topics of interest to participants. The Campaign Network will provide a place to generate ideas around materials, campaign or event tactics, learn about existing successful campaigns and EV outreach efforts, and share challenges and solutions. Better Buildings BC provides incentives for Net-Zero Energy-Ready buildings

The Province of BC recently launched Better Buildings BC: The Net-Zero Energy-Ready Challenge. This is a provincial incentive program and juried competition designed to support, promote and celebrate the design and construction of net-zero energy-ready buildings. The program provides incentives to builders and developers of multi-family, commercial, and institutional buildings that are designed to achieve the top tier of the BC Energy Step Code. Expressions of Interest are due by November 30, 2018 and should be sent to info@betterbuildingsbc.ca

New Organics Infrastructure Program supports organics diversion from landfills

The Province of BC has recently announced a joint investment with the Government of Canada to support the Organics Infrastructure Program in British Columbia. The program will help divert unprocessed municipal organic waste from landfills and/or agricultural waste from direct land application, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Local governments are invited to apply as main applicants but can choose to team with a range of partners. Expressions of Interest (EOI) are due by November 30, 2018 (extended from November 7th).

Green Shores

Join Green Shores Local Government Group

Green Shores Local Government Group helps enhance the capacity of staff and elected officials who work with landowners and other stakeholders in shoreline planning and protection through the Green Shores program. This work is especially important in light of climate change adaptation and the need to integrate Green Shores with other key planning and community engagement processes. Local Governments are invited to submit expressions of interest to joining the Green Shores Local Government Working Group for the January 2019 intake. Contact dg@stewardshipcentrebc.ca.
