Meeting of Salaried Doctors

AMA (WA) President Dr Richard Choong chaired a meeting of Senior Salaried Doctors and Doctors in Training at the FJ Clarke Lecture Theatre at Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre recently to update members on the current round of salaried negotiations. Members were advised of the key claims made by the Association on behalf of Senior and Junior doctors and the subsequent offer that had been made by the government.  Members in attendance were presented with two resolutions and discussed actions that could be taken should the Government not present an acceptable offer.

The AMA (WA) is confident that a resolution will be reached soon, and to the satisfaction of all parties.

UGPA calls on government to urgently address clinical utility of PCEHR

United General Practice Australia has called on the government to heed concerns raised by GPs regarding the significant clinical utility issues associated with the Personally Controlled eHealth Record (PCEHR) system and address them as an urgent priority.

UGPA is calling for the implementation of the PCEHR to be profession-led and include:

  • GP input at every level of the PCEHR development life cycle, including planning through to implementation;
  • Ensuring the system is clinically safe, usable and fit for purpose;
  • Support by an acceptable, and robust legal and privacy framework;
  • Secure messaging interoperability as a critical dependency priority.

Medical Register listing scam still an issue for GPs

The AMA (WA) has informed members that a number of practices have been approached with the offer of a free listing in the Australasian Health Professionals Directory. Unfortunately general practitioners and their practice managers are still falling for this scam, and it's likely to continue for the forseeable future.

On no account should doctors or practices make any payment or provide credit card details.

Those who have signed up to AUHPD should immediately send a follow-up communication rescinding their participation. Doctors and practices that receive demands for payment or financial information from AUHPD should immediately contact the local Office of Fair Trading or the ACCC.

For further details or information, please contact the AMA (WA) on (08) 9273 3008 or email Michael Prendergast.

The purpose of the review is to examine and improve processes for driver’s licence holders who have medical conditions. Dr Choong raised concerns around some of the processes relating to medical assessments for drivers, including impacts on the doctor / patient relationship, medico-legal and privacy concerns and the lack of clarity around conducting these assessments for patients with certain medical conditions.
