AMA (WA) Elections for Office Bearers and Council 2019

Nominations for AMA (WA) President, Vice Presidents (two), Ordinary Council positions and Specialty Group Representatives have now closed.

This year, for the first time, the AMA (WA) will use electronic voting. TrueVote Pty Ltd will conduct the election on behalf of the Association.

TrueVote is an independent electronic ballot management organisation.

AMA (WA) voting members can use a wide range of internet devices from which to cast their personal ballots including smart phones, tablets and desktop computers.

All connections to TrueVote servers are fully encrypted and secured with member voting accessible at any time throughout the ballot period.

The protection built into TrueVote ensures there is no opportunity for unauthorised access to voting or member details contained in the ballot.

The next step in the process is to ensure that all eligible members who wish to participate in the voting process must be financial. If you are still to renew your 2019 membership, or wish to join as a member please contact AMA (WA) Membership office immediately on (08) 9273 3011.

The declaration of results will be announced at the 2019 Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 3 July.

Should you have any questions please contact the AMA (WA) Returning Officer, Paul Boyatzis on (08) 9273 3007.

Wage Theft

AMA (WA) has taken a strong stand against wage theft by the WA Health Department.

Our submission to the Government’s inquiry into the issue argued that severe penalties should be considered in an effort to curtail the practice.

ABC Perth recently featured the problem, focussing on comments made by AMA (WA) President Dr Omar Khorshid, who said junior doctors in particular are actively being discouraged from claiming overtime that they are legally entitled to be paid.

WA members inducted into the AMA Roll of Fellows

The AMA has inducted seven new members into the AMA Roll of Fellows, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to both the medical profession and the AMA. Among those inducted were AMA (WA) President Dr Omar Khorshid and AMA Councillor Professor Mark Khangure.

AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone, announced their addition to the Roll at the AMA National Conference in Brisbane at the weekend.

“These seven outstanding doctors have excelled not just in their medical specialties, but in their roles as advocates for the profession,” Dr Bartone said.

AMA Financial Services - Make the most of your tax deductions and strategies

Now’s the time to put in place the strategies that could save you paying more tax than you need to.

One strategy you could consider is funding your insurance premiums through superannuation. And, for the more comprehensive insurance options, usually only available outside of super, there are tax-effective options including claiming a tax deduction on your income protection insurance.

The tax tips and tax return checklist will help you prepare your tax return and includes some handy tax tips on:

  • making voluntary super contributions and claiming a tax deduction
  • prepaying interest
  • super co-contributions
  • offsetting capital losses

If you would like to take advantage of some of these strategies or would like to know more about the best tax-effective investments, please contact AMA Financial Services on 1800 262 346 or email advice@amafp.com.au
