Dear Colleagues and Friends, I am delighted to present to you the AEC Newsletter for May 2023. It has been a busy time for the association, with advocacy taking a prominent place in our most recent work. Alongside ELIA, Culture Action Europe and the EMC, AEC issued a Joint Response to the Horizon Europe Coordination and Support Action Calls 2023. The Call's text reinterpreted the STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) concept almost exclusively as a means to bridge the gender gap within the STEM fields. The group considered that this framing undermined the original raison d’être of STEAM — its inherent potential to promote creativity and innovation - and made the case in the strongest terms. The European Performing Arts Student Association (EPASA) held its first online conference last month, a landmark occasion. I am very grateful to the driving forces behind the formation of EPASA, which is linked to our shared ambition to embed the student voice into AEC and our member institutions. I am sure this association will thrive, and it will continue to have AEC's fullest support. Many thanks to those of you who have filled in the recent ARTEMIS & EPASA survey on Digitisation, AEC Goes Green, Lifelong Learning and IRC surveys. It is important to us to get the sectoral perspective, and I would encourage you to respond whenever possible to AEC surveys. Your input adds hugely to our understanding of these ever evolving and important areas of research and development. Best wishes, Deborah Kelleher (She/her) President, European Association of Conservatoires (AEC) This month we get to hear from Gretchen Amussen who talks about her involvement in the organisation from the early nineties up to her contribution to the Strengthening Music in Society (SMS) project. AEC and its partner organisations felt compelled to write an open letter urging the European Commission to adopt a more holistic view on STEAM and interdisciplinarity. On 25-26 May, OOO2 partners met in Porto to decide upon the final programme and schedule of the itinerant performances that will premiere in autumn 2024 and discuss communication, dissemination and audience engagement activities. The MUSense project organised a Training Activity on Cyber and digital as new perspectives in music performance at Musical Instrument Museum - MIM in Brussels from May 3-6, 2023. The ARTEMIS Digitisation Working Group launched a survey to understand the presence and impact of digitisation within Higher Music Education (HME). Please forward to all students! In April and May, MusiQuE held its Board Meeting in Brussels, presented its Critical Friend Reviews at the ENQA Members’ Forum in Tbilisi and took part in the Pearle conference in Oslo. AEC will start the pilot period with the Austrian company SoP Mobility Online in June. Input by EASY institutions is needed in May and training sessions will be offered in June and September The European Performing Arts Students Association (EPASA) is thrilled to share with you the exciting highlights of its first-ever conference which brought together talented students from member institutions of AEC.
