“If you’re thinking religion, he wasn’t.” The dead Danforth mass shooter, Faisal Hussain, wasn’t interested in extremist behaviour, according to his friend Aamir Sukhera. Hussain’s family issued a statement about how “mental health challenges” led him to a “life of struggle and pain.” Questions linger about whether the attack was planned, considering the shooter’s proficiency with a gun he acquired.

“The Elevator Guy” wants a fast ride to the clamshell. Han Dong, who wasn't re-elected to Queen’s Park despite his dedication to fixing condo elevators, is now in the running for a city council seat in a heavily contested new downtown ward. But another candidate, Kevin Vuong, claims that Dong was supporting him until recently. Dong brought along a different political friend to help him out:

Hedley frontman gets seen before court. Jacob Hoggard was arrested and charged with one count of sexual interference and two counts of causing bodily harm, based on two alleged offences dating back to 2016. At least one charge is linked to a woman who publicly claimed she was raped by him. Hoggard denies the allegation. Police released his mug shot in an effort to find other possible victims.

TIFF always has space for Jason Reitman. Harry Gulkin dead at 90. The movie producer was best known for giving Montreal an anglo cinematic identity by adapting the books Lies My Father Told Me and Two Solitudes. He also oversaw the film version of Mordecai Richler’s Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang. Gulkin was later the focus of a film himself, when he was revealed as Sarah Polley's biological father in her documentary Stories We Tell.
