Welcome to the second weekly newsletter for NZ Music Month 2019: Discover Live The first week of NZ Music Month we started our celebration of the venues of Aotearoa. Each day we've been giving a shoutout to places where live music has the opportunity to shine. Some we've featured have 30+ years of history like Golden Bay's Mussel Inn, Napier's The Cabana (opened in 1958!), or the all-ages creative space in Palmerston North, The Stomach. Then there were other great spots like Gisborne's Smash Palace, Mount Maunganui's Totara Street, and Hallertau on the outskirts of Auckland. You can check out all the Venue of The Day posts across our social media channels. We've also been running a great series of anecdotes on our Facebook page about historic venues - 'Facts of Live' - supplied to us by music history website, Audioculture. One post gave a shoutout to the woman who ran the Cabana, Charlie Morrison, through the heady 70s and 80s. When she retired in 1984, members of Hello Sailor and DD Smash took part in a free concert to see her off! Another goal for this month is to provide information to musicians touring within New Zealand (you'll find
info about one of the seminars below). We've been sharing tips on our Instagram from musicians such as Ladi6, Randa, and Logan Bell from Katchafire. See the full list of touring tips on our website. SENNHEISER PRESENTS - HEADS GARAGE SESSIONS Catch some of NZ’s best up and coming artists filmed live as part of Sennheiser Presents Live at Heads Garage. This Friday 10 May NZ Music Month
in association with Sennheiser will be presenting the first of a video series of live sessions recorded at Swish in Auckland using a range of Sennheiser evolution series and evolution G4 microphones. This NZ Music Month project sees fresh kiwi acts playing in Swish’s “Heads Garage” - an old mechanics garage that has been turned into creative space, though with remnants of its former life still on show. The sessions were professionally filmed and recording using Sennheiser MKE 600 shotgun mics and sound mixed live by Suren Unka. The first video presents pop act, Tijay. Her latest track ‘Better Off’ dropped in late April and immediately landed on Apple Music’s Best of the Week, buoyed by the slick production provided by Vince Harder. Each Friday of this month will see the release of a new video, with artists spread across various genres representing the best of New Zealands new and upcoming music. Artists coming up in the
coming weeks are SOJØURN, Balu Brigada, MELODOWNZ and Dbldbl Each act has a new release planned during May, making the Sennheiser presents sessions a great opportunity to see these acts showcasing what they can do in a live setting for New Zealand Music Month. Follow NZ Music Month on Facebook or Twitter to make sure you catch when each new video drops and head to Sennheiser to find out more about the mics being used by each of the artists.

This new series looks at some of the legendary “anthems” written and performed by local musicians. The first episode looked at how a song gains power from being performed live, while the second examined the songwriting process. If you missed them, the show can now be streamed via the Prime website. The third episode will play this Sunday 12 May at 8.30pm on Prime and looks at how kiwi musicians break through the crowded media landscape to get attention for their music. From music videos that took on a life of their own to new media platforms for a new generation, artists such as Tiki Taane, Dave Dobbyn and Lorde tell the stories behind their songs and the unexpected ways they found their audience. Featuring anthems by Tiki Taane, Dave Dobbyn, Herbs, Che Fu & DLT, Goodshirt, Peking Man, Gin Wigmore, Sharon O’Neill and Lorde
