As temperatures begin to drop, you may start thinking about getting out sweaters and warm jackets. In the wine world, everyone begins thinking of harvest. You may be pondering pumpkin-spice lattes, but in the Rhône Valley, they are thinking of the warm spices that oak barrels will bring to their new wines. Now is the perfect time to find your ideal fall wine. Hint: it’s a Côtes du Rhône blend. This week, we’re pouring the 2018 Les Dauphins Red blend which combines all of those fall spices with ripe fruit notes that let summer echo on your palate.
Tasting Notes: This rich blend of Grenache and Syrah creates fleshy black berry notes with warm spices and light floral touches. The medium body carries velvety tannins through a balanced finish of baked fruit and liquorice notes.
Enjoy With: Grilled red meats, spiced sausages, pizza, and Manchego or Gouda cheese.
Style: A fruity, medium-bodied red wine.
Terroir/Region: The Côtes du Rhône region of France runs along the southern stretch of the Rhône river valley as it reaches toward the Mediterranean. This region is known for strong sun, stony hillsides, and a powerful wind called the ‘Mistral’. This wind can be strong enough to knock you over, but it also helps growers by circulating air, lowering the risk of vine issues like molds or pest problems.
Producer: Cellier des Dauphins unites 13 wine co-operatives from the Côtes du Rhône region, expressing the south of France’s convivial art de vivre. A bold spirit and sense of solidarity guides the farmers and winemakers of Cellier des Dauphins as they strive to raise quality from vine to glass.
