What's happening this month on Your Waterfront Kia ora, The air may be getting chillier now winter has formally arrived but things aren't slowing down on the waterfront, with upgrades to an old bridge and a new website, art indoors and out, and fun new additions to explore in the public realm. So bundle up and go exploring. Ngā mihi The Your Waterfront Team Viaduct Bascule Bridge RepairsWe discussed last month that Bascule Bridge, which links Te Wero and Wynyard Quarter to the City Centre, is due for a refresh after 90 years of service. As part of its long-term maintenance plan, the bridge decking is needing to be completely replaced and the balustrades upgraded. These works are now beginning in early June and will continue over the winter months when it is the least disruptive for traffic flow, marina users and events that take place across the waterfront. A temporary scaffold bridge has been installed to maintain access for foot traffic and active modes of transport while Bascule is out of action. Waterfront ActivationsMore play equipment and activations are beginning to roll out along your waterfront. The "Urban Island" of Hobson Wharf, tucked away past the Maritime Museum is open to the public and home to new grassy mounds and line markings and flags. Have a poke around and keep checking back as more play equipment will pop up there over the next few months. Keep a look out too for the ever changing surprises at the bases on Hamner St. There are some exciting additions coming later this year. New Wynyard Quarter WebsiteWe have just launched a revamped website for Wynyard Quarter. It has the up to date information you need on all the things to see and do and discover in the quarter. There are fantastic profiles of the people and places who make Wynyard Quarter the wonderful community it is, including 88 year old Ross Johnson who was behind the silo's the park gets it's name from, way back in 1961. Click through below to have a browse, enjoy the gorgeous videos, and bookmark the website for next time you want to check what's going on in Wynyard Quarter. Te Ara TukutukuIn May a small crowd met at Sustainable Coastlines on Madden Street to hear more on the public realm of Te Ara Tukutuku from Eke Panuku Priority Location Director Fiona Knox, members of the Toi Waihanga design team and representatives from our mana whenua partners.
