Click here Gateway85 CID and its board would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy new year, and we're excited about reaching new heights in the new decade. ELECTION WATCHGateway85 will be keeping a keen eye on the candidates running this election cycle, including those running for County Chairman and House and Senate races – depending on who qualifies by March. Gateway85 plans to host the County’s largest Candidate Forum on April 22 at The Global Mall, which is located on Jimmy Carter Boulevard and easily accessible from I-85. Gateway85 CID will release more details in February, but the community will be invited to attend and listen to select candidates running for the County and State’s most coveted seats. More to come next month! PROJECT UPDATESBeing the largest CID in the state also means we have a great deal of critical projects and studies happening, some of which the CID is funding, others which will impact our district along with others in the region. Here’s the latest update on each. Jimmy Carter Boulevard Signal Timing: Gateway85 is consistently reviewing signal timing along this vital corridor to ensure that lights are maximizing traffic flow. Let us know how your JCB commute is going! Freight Logistics Study: Atlas has been conducting focus group meetings and planning sessions for the past six months to learn how freight currently moves through the district and the obstacles must be overcome to improve that movement. The study is expected to be complete August 31, 2020. Truck Parking Study: With new rules on how long truck drivers can be actively driving, where they park to rest is a big issue. Kimley-Horn is leading this massive study to learn where trucks are currently parking within the district and the options available to minimize their impact on businesses and the surrounding community. I-85 Corridor Study: Georgia DOT and Gwinnett County are partnering to conduct a Comprehensive Corridor Study along I-85. The study area is roughly 18 miles long and is primarily located within Gwinnett County. The study will propose solutions to reduce congestion, enhance traffic operations and improve safety in this area. Through collaboration with stakeholders and the public, a wide range of potential solutions will be identified. These alternatives will be analyzed and the recommendations will be developed for implementation. GDOT is currently conducting a survey to help them better understand the issues that are important to the community. Click here to take the survey! In addition, GDOT is holding three community meetings on the project.
Transit Study: Gwinnett Department of Transportation will be studying options to implement Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) along the I-85 corridor to improve transit options and help to alleviate traffic congestion. The study is expected to start in the winter of this year. A related, but separate, BRT study by Atlas and Kimley-Horn is also happening along the top-end perimeter from Smyrna to Tucker to Northlake along I-285 to determine where to build stations, determine ridership estimates and the best way to fund a new “rubber wheel” system. TRANSPORTATION IS KEY TO GROWTHOver the past decade, Gwinnett County has seen exponential growth and has become home to a diverse population and thousands of thriving businesses. An article from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution named Gwinnett County the second-most populated metro Atlanta county. As the population continues to increase, the need to improve metro Atlanta transportation options are becoming more critical. Gwinnett officials have a plan to ensure that the county keeps up with transportation demands and Gateway85 is committed to helping maintain Gwinnett’s status as one of metro Atlanta’s premier places to live and work. In fact, County official closed on the purchase of 103 acres from OFS Brightwave Solutions at the end of last year and it’s expected to be used for economic redevelopment. “The site along the Jimmy Carter Boulevard corridor is one of the premier pieces of real estate in metro Atlanta, which makes this a good deal for our community and a strategic investment in its long-term success,” Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash said in a statement. In the coming months, the CID will continue to update you on transportation-related news and its impact on the district.
