Alaska Housing's role in the state

One thing we know is housing. From supporting shelters to financing one in three mortgages in the state last year, our mission to provide Alaskans access to safe, quality and affordable housing never waivers.

As a state agency charged with responsibly administering corporate and federal dollars, I am proud of the work we do in public housing that both meets our mission and incentivizes families to work toward financial self-sufficiency, while also injecting nearly $3 million each month into the private sector.

Accepting applications for Anchorage rental assistance

Deadline for Alaskans to apply for the Anchorage rental assistance lottery is TODAY.

The federally funded Housing Choice Voucher program is accepting applications in Anchorage through Alaska Housing. Landlords who accept the vouchers receive a monthly rental payment directly from Alaska Housing as well as their tenant. For low-income families with a workable adult, rental support is limited to five years.

Maria’s seven tips for the savvy homebuyer

Alaska Housing Outreach Specialist and instructor of our HomeChoice™ homebuyer education class, Maria Celli, shares her top seven tips for savvy homebuyers.

1. Credit is king!
To obtain a mortgage loan for the purchase of a home, a homebuyer must meet credit score requirements. A good initial step is to get a free credit report through AnnualCreditReport.com before going to a lender.

2. Purchasing a home is a long-term commitment
Plan on living in a new home for more than a few years. The transaction costs of buying and selling a home far exceed that of renting and a short-term homeowner may run the risk of losing money.

Council on Eliminating Barriers to Affordable Housing Development
On June 25, President Trump signed an executive order to establish the Council on Eliminating Barriers to Affordable Housing Development.

The Council will engage with state, local, and tribal leaders as well as private-sector stakeholders to identify regulations and practices that artificially raise the cost of housing development and contribute to the shortage of affordable housing.

Buying or renting in Anchorage? Here’s what to consider
A new study suggests it's cheaper to buy than rent in Anchorage — by about $100 a month. Before you trade your rent payment for a monthly mortgage, local realtors say there's more to consider.
