Taking action to improve care for patients

We've recently taken action or opened an investigation at the following foundation trusts:

  • We've used our powers to make Medway NHS Foundation Trust appoint a new Chairman and Chief Executive, ensuring that it has the right leadership in place to address the wide range of significant problems it faces.
     
  • We've appointed The Royal Marsden, which has a world leading reputation for cancer research, to support Colchester Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust in improving its delivery of cancer services.
     
  • We've secured a formal, legally binding agreement to ensure Cumbria Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust complies with clinical quality standards, offers good quality care to patients and its board has good oversight of how the trust operates.

Supporting NHS foundation trusts who are contemplating mergers

Monitor's Chief Executive Dr David Bennett has written to foundation trusts, NHS trusts and commissioners to seek their views on our proposed new approach to mergers.

We intend to engage with foundation trusts at an early stage to ensure any proposal works well for patients, from both good governance and competition perspectives. Read more and feed back your views by 28 February 2014 >

Securing essential services for patients in Mid Staffordshire

We've approved the proposed dissolution of Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust and passed the Trust Special Administrators' recommendations to the Secretary of State for Health.

We're satisfied the package of measures put forward by the administrators is the most appropriate solution for the local health economy that can be found in the circumstances. Read more >

Protecting choice for patients and preventing anti-competitive behaviour

We've published guidance for commissioners and providers following our investigation into the commissioning of specialist cancer surgery services in Greater Manchester and Cheshire. Read more >

We're also reviewing a proposal to merge the pathology services of Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and Surrey & Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. Read more >

Investigations closed

We've closed our investigation into Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, having found no evidence that the trust is in breach of its licence.
