Good morning. I have never been fortunate enough to have an executive or leadership coach so instead, I've spent a lot of time reading about the philosophies and tactics of great leadership coaches.  Here's one set of questions that have stuck with me.

Elevate your operation 

The following five questions come from the coaching of Matt Mochary and were summarized by Matt Schnuck.  Matt Mochary is one of the most sought-after coaches in Silicon Valley.  His approach transcends the tech world and can easily make an impact in the senior living space.

He refers to these as "magic questions" because of their ability to open up and motivate teams.  They cause you to reach for a new level and at the same time make you feel like you have the support to get there.

The questions are answered using a scale of 1-7

1- It's bad

4- It's average, or meeting expectations

7-It's great

Here are the questions and why they work.

1. How are you feeling about your life at work?   

Why it works- It causes you to disconnect from your role and opens you up to share your experience.  From the leader's perspective it provides insight how to best support this team member at work.

2. Do you have the tools to effectively do your job?

Why it works- Like it or not, most people will suffer in silence rather than feeling like they're complaining.  Whether it's the schedule, their office set-up, or something else this question invites teammates to share what you could change or influence to help them better perform.                                       

3. How are we performing as a community?   

Why it works- It tells you exactly what their expectations of the organization are and how we can all do better.

4. What is it like to work with our team?            

Why it works- You will hear the good, the bad, and the ugly of team relationships and unspoken dynamics you may not be aware of.

5. What is it like to work with me?

Why it works- It's a down-and-dirty and quick 360 to understand how you're being experienced by others. 

After you ask each question follow up with

"How do we get to the next level?"

We may not have the privilege of having an executive coach, but we can still learn from their lessons and philosophies.
