Why we love Giving Tuesday No Images? Click here Beat the Black Friday BluesHello, Tomorrow morning, doors will slide open at megastores across North America to kick off the holiday season with the consumption carnival known as Black Friday. To all of us at Ecotrust Canada, Black Friday—and its online counterpart Cyber Monday—is an unsettling symbol of inequity, a distress signal from a society out of whack. That’s why we participate in Giving Tuesday, a global movement celebrating generosity that kicks off each year shortly after the dust settles down at the mall. Each November, millions of Canadians participate in Giving Tuesday by volunteering their time or donating to an organization they believe in. We’re proud to be a part of the festivities as an official partner of Giving Tuesday Canada. You already know about the difference we're making—in rural resource communities, in the streets of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, in the economically depressed towns of Nova Scotia, and elsewhere. We wanted to reach out to you today with this heads up and special invitation. Our board has offered to match any donation, dollar for dollar, made to Ecotrust Canada this coming Giving Tuesday, November 29. By participating, you can double the impact of your gift, whether it’s $5 or $500. We're not asking you to donate today, but we will invite you to chip in this Giving Tuesday. Watch this space for a nudge from us! All best to you; we hope you make Giving Tuesday a seasonal tradition in your family, if it isn't one already. —Jean and the Ecotrust Canada team Photo: Black Friday November 2009 at Walmart in Indianapolis, Indiana, by Laurie via Flickr, used under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0). |
