May 28th - Opening Day!

The 2011 season begins this Saturday! While the weather may still seem like early spring or even winter, the fishing on Silver Creek will undoubtedly be great; just don't expect to have the whole place to yourself. Silver Creek is probably one of the only quality fisheries in the west that will be in good shape. Record breaking snowpack and cold weather will keep many rivers high into July. The Big Wood is running high and dangerous, and the Big Lost may be bumped up on a moments notice. Stick around all day on the creek, as crowds tend to diminish mid-day, or if the flows stay below 400 cfs make the trip through Arco and fish the Big Lost.

We are looking forward to another great season!

Dave's favorite Brown Drake pattern - Nealley's Brown Drake

Anticipating the Hatch...
By Dave Faltings
With the cool weather this spring I expect the Brown Drake hatch to be in mid-June. Silver Creek has already cleared and is looking very good. My favorite Brown Drake pattern is the Nealley's Brown Drake. This is a big pattern with rubber legs and deer hair, and is very visible in the evenings. In addition, a Harrop Paraspinner is a must for the spinners.

I like to use 5x early in the hatch and as dusk approaches I use 4x. Remember, on cloudy, overcast days the hatch can come off in the mornings so always pay attention and look to see if the bugs are going. I've had some of my best fishing with few people around in the mornings once the hatch has started.

This is a great hatch to begin the season and is one of your best opportunities to land a big brown on a dry fly. It's also a time to renew acquaintances and bring a new fly fishing season to the here and now.

Fly Tying Materials

"We now offer a well stocked fly-tying inventory. Featuring materials from Hareline, Umpqua and Spirit River. Most importantly, we have a large inventory of Grizzly Hackles and other Whiting Eurohackles, a very high demand material that we were lucky to find!"

Steelhead Season Recap
By John McLaughlin
Another steelhead season has come and gone, leaving us with great memories and anticipation for next year. Overall, it was a great year on the upper Salmon this spring. After last year's epic run we could only hope that this year's run would be comparable. The river stayed low, clear and cold for most of April, creating a slow moving run of steelhead arriving from the town of Salmon and below. The number of fish indicated an average year, but the fish that did reach the town of Stanley were big and strong. Unfortunately, they were about a week behind schedule.
South central Idaho had a late winter this year, creating some cold fishing days for many. The prime time this year, as you could expect on most years, was around the 2nd week of April. Fishing remained good throughout the end of the month. At this time the temperatures have risen and the spring run-off is starting to take effect. The Salmon River is gaining momentum and should have a significant amount of water pushing the many thousands of steelhead smolt back to the ocean. That said, I expect a great return next year, big steelhead and lots of them!
