Tourism WA to receive $12 million funding boost

A $12 million injection to Tourism Western Australia’s international marketing push for this financial year and next is expected to bring thousands of visitors to the State. The State Government’s 2019-20 State Budget, set to be handed down on May 9, will include $9 million to complement existing funding to make up the new $12 million tourism package. The funding injection is expected to attract more international visitors to Western Australia and provide a substantial jobs boost.  The significant funding will help attract holiday-makers from key South East Asian markets, including Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Hong Kong, as well as long-haul destinations such as the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States of America. The marketing efforts will include activities that have the greatest impact on driving visitors to book trips to Western Australia. These include partnering with airlines, overseas travel companies, online travel agencies and inbound tour operators on joint co-operative marketing campaigns; and entering partnerships with key Perth hotels for stopover programs. The additional funding will also be used to extend existing campaign activity. For more information, read the story on our corporate website.

WA Tourism - ‘Our Story’ workshops continue

Tourism WA held a workshop with tourism operators and professionals in Broome this week. The aim of the workshop was to get feedback from industry members on how to define Tourism WA’s unique tourism brand story. The development of this story, a narrative that is owned across the tourism industry in WA, is important because it will help us align and differentiate our marketing. That means, in a crowded marketplace, it will be easier for a visitor to choose WA over one of our competitors. Follow @wa_tourism_our_story on Instagram and read more about the brand story here.

New campaign to boost regional tourism in Australia

The Federal Government has announced a new campaign to attract more working holiday makers to Australia, helping to support our farmers and boost regional tourism. Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Simon Birmingham said Australia had a reputation as a top destination for working holiday makers, but more could be done to convince them to pack their bags and book a flight here. The campaign, Australia Inc., will run through the UK, France and Germany and target young people who have a high likelihood of considering overseas travel with temporary work. For more information, read the Federal Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment’s media statement.

Transport Act introduces changes to tourism licensing

Recent changes to legislation may affect tourism operators’ services, following the release of the Transport (Road Passenger Services) Act 2018 on February 28. The Act introduces three categories of passenger transport – on-demand passenger transport, tourism passenger transport (TPT) and regular passenger transport (RPT). If an individual or a business takes bookings for on-demand passenger transport, they are required to obtain an on-demand booking service authorisation by April 1, to continue operating legally. The Department of Transport’s regional teams are engaging with local operators (including tour and charter operators) to help explain how the reform will affect them.
