Greetings to all

Especially to our new additions to this TRNZ newsletter database – we’re very excited to have you onboard.

I want to start this newsletter on a personal note – Lorena and I welcomed baby Alonso into our now family of three in April. He is growing so fast and changing everyday, as with all new parents we are besotted with him, although the night time wakes are a little overrated!

We have some important updates this month, read below for further information:

  • Lakeland Queen survey
  • TRNZ welcomes Spencer on Byron Hotel
  • Distinction Hotel Group adds a new property to the portfolio
  • Additional value added to Tamaki Maori Village Overnight Marae Stay

LAKELAND QUEEN SURVEY 21st July to 29th July 2014

It is time for the Lakeland Queen to have its Out of Water Survey.  This will be done in accordance with Maritime New Zealand and licensed surveyors.

During the process of the survey we will be taking the opportunity to do some refurbishment which includes reconditioning of motors and refurbishment of bar and service areas.  It will also include new paint including anti fowling and a general tidy up of the vessel which will have the Queen in top condition for the busy months ahead.

The Lakeland Queen will not be available for sailings from the 21st to 29th of July 2014. The office will be open as usual to take enquiries and reservations and we are still accepting group bookings for Breakfast and Lunch cruises until the last sailing day before the survey which is the 20th of July 2014.

We have chosen this time of year for minimum disruption and as a valued client please accept our apologies if during this time of the out of water survey, has caused any complications with your clients.

On behalf of the Lakeland Queen Directors, Captain and Crew we sincerely thank you for your support and look forward to providing a quality product and experience for your clients on the Lakeland Queen.

If you require any further information please contact Terri Harford at info@lakelandqueen.com or phone 07 3480265.

BUSINESS WILL BE AS USUAL FROM THE 30th July 2014.

Distinction Hotels is delighted to announce the latest addition to its New Zealand-owned and operated hotel group -- Travelodge Hotel Palmerston North.

Distinction Hotels has purchased the Palmerston North hotel and took over operations on May 26 2014, when it was rebranded to Distinction Palmerston North Hotel & Conference Centre.

The elegant 4-star hotel is situated in the hub of Palmerston North’s buoyant CBD. It is just a few minutes’ walk from lively cafes, shops, theatres, art galleries, the museum and the convention centre. The property offers one of the largest conference venues in the lower North Island, with four meeting rooms and extensive on-site professional, conference co-ordination services, catering for smaller groups or up to 500 delegates. Further complementing the meeting facilities is the hotel’s cosmopolitan restaurant and two stylish bars.
Distinction Hotels Chief Executive Duncan Fletcher said the group’s latest acquisition was a strategic move to offer additional services and accommodation options.

“The Palmerston North hotel specialises in meetings, functions and conferences and we know the demand is there,” he said.
“We see this as a great opportunity to grow Distinction’s corporate and conference portfolio by refining and adding to the services already offered.”

Value added to overnight marae stay

Sleeping on a marae is an age-old Maori custom, when two tribes came together to discuss important matters. They entered the marae’s intricately carved ancestral house (wharenui) where they stayed and slept until a decision was reached through negotiation then finally sealed with a handshake and the pressing of noses.

Tamaki Maori Village have been sharing this authentic overnight marae experience for the past two years. A new development now incorporates entertainment areas, private bar facilities, an outdoor theatre screening favourite Kiwi films and steaming hot tubs.

Marae stay guests are taken on a spiritual journey that allows them to experience a ceremony once used to prepare Maori warriors for battle. After participating in a series of movements and breathing techniques designed to achieve a focussed yet relaxed state-of-mind, and be at one with nature, visitors are ready to learn the ancient art of mau rakau; combat sequences performed with a traditional quarterstaff.

One on one learning continues as guests sit beside an outdoor fire pit and participate in the time honoured process of harvesting, shredding and weaving the simple flax blade into a workable product. From the muka (strands) they can see the multiple uses Maori have created from the humble flax plant.

A truly unforgettable experience nestled amongst the native Tawa forest at Tamaki Maori Village.
