What uncomfortable conversation have you been pushing off?
Elevate your career Personal or career development plans always seemed pointless and more for show than anything else. As a result, I never bothered creating one in the past. This year I decided to research how to create one, and I've realized how valuable the process is. I've made my own and learned a ton along the way. Most of all, I wish I had done it sooner. Instead of waiting as I did, follow these five steps to craft your career development plan. 1. Start with the end in mind. Start by writing your mission statement. Where do you hope to be and why. Is it a role? An accomplishment? A skill? Be as specific as possible. Research shows you're over 40% more likely to achieve your goals by simply writing them down. 2. Identify what's getting in the way. Before you dig into how you will achieve your goal, it's essential to reflect on your current practices and identify what's holding you back. For this exercise, use every feedback channel you have access to. Annual evaluations, 360 feedback sessions with peers, your spouse, and your own insights are all areas to pull from. Do you stay up too late, causing you to be off your game in the morning? Write it down. Have a poor relationship with a specific department or corporate partner? Write it down. Are you working on too many competing priorities? Write it down. Starting with removing hurdles is the first step to moving forward. 3. Identify the Lead measures to your success After identifying and (hopefully) removing the time-consuming bad habits and actions that are getting in your way, you need to identify the fundamental lead measures to your success. Lead measures inform the likelihood that you will meet your goal. For example, if a goal is to improve your executive presence within your organization, lead measures for this goal could include. 1. Attending and presenting at one monthly corporate meeting for the next 12 months. 2. Volunteer and participate in an enterprise pilot program in the next 60 days, and present the results to the corporate operations team. 3. Over the next 60 days, enroll and complete a Coursera course on Executive Presence Training. Identifying solid lead measures will increase your chance of success. 4. Create a scorecard and measure your progress weekly What gets measured gets done. Create a cadence and identify a day, time, and place every week to compile your scoreboard and ensure you're sticking to each of your lead measures. Adjust and pivot your lead measures as necessary to ensure you're moving toward your goals. If you lack the willpower to make this a consistent practice, utilize someone you trust to join you each week to keep you accountable to your goals. 5. Create a PR plan Executing your development plan will transform you internally and be noticed by those around you. But that's not enough. Once you begin gaining traction, identify the two to three stakeholders who can and will influence your career path. Take the time to explain your development plan, ask for their input, and ask to share your progress with them throughout your plan. No one accomplishes anything of value without the help of others. Including influencers in your journey and sharing your progress will help to build your network of supporters. Give it a try, and let us know what you would add or change.
