Welcome to Issue 34 of Crash Towing Industry News.

This week’s newsletter highlights the following topics:

  • Setting up a DoTDirect business account
  • Towing business authorisation checklist
  • Towing business authorisation - application guides

Setting up a DoTDirect Business Account

Applications for a towing business authorisation must be submitted through DoTDirect, the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure’s online platform. Applications will open in DoTDirect on 1 July 2026. To apply, you must have the correct type of DoTDirect account based on your business structure.

Although applications open on 1 July 2026, you can set up your DoTDirect account now if you don’t already have one.

Company or Incorporated Body

  • Must have a DoTDirect organisation account.
  • Applications for authorisation must be submitted via an organisation account.

If you do not already have an organisation account, you will need to register for one via the Profile page of the main applicant’s personal account.

Partnerships and Trusts

  • Must have a DoTDirect organisation account.
  • Applications for authorisation must be submitted via an organisational account.

As partnerships and trusts cannot register vehicles under their organisation account, they must apply for a DoTDirect organisation account via the Towing Governance and Regulation (TG&R) team. A dedicated registration form will be released to applicants with the next newsletter.

Sole Traders

  • Must have a DoTDirect individual account with an ABN linked to it.
  • Applications for authorisation must be submitted via an individual account.

If your ABN is already linked:

  • You can proceed to submit your application.

If your ABN is not yet linked, you must provide the following:

  • ASIC ABN Lookup report (available free at abr.business.gov.au/Tools/AbnLookup)
  • Your name and WA driver’s licence number

Please email these details to: Towing@transport.wa.gov.au

Towing Business Authorisation Checklist

To help applicants prepare a complete application, a towing business authorisation checklist has been developed. This checklist outlines the required documentation, information, and storage yard standards needed for approval.

The checklist is for applicant use only. It does not need to be uploaded as part of the application or submitted to the TG&R team at any stage.

Towing Business Authorisation - Application Guides

To assist with completing a towing business authorisation application through DoTDirect, please refer to the ‘step-by-step’ application guides below. Please note that applications will not be visible in DoTDirect until 1 July 2026.

Application processes differ depending on your business structure. Sole traders follow a slightly different process to other business types, so ensure you select the guide that matches your business model:

  • Company, incorporated body, partnerships and trusts
  • Sole trader

If you experience any difficulties during the application process, please contact the TG&R team using the ‘Contact us’ details provided below.

Applications for towing business authorisation will open in DoTDirect on 1 July 2026.

Where do I find more information to prepare for towing business authorisations?

The ‘Preparing for Towing Business Authorisation’ guide provides detailed information on how to get ready to apply and is available on the Transport WA website.
