GreenCare for Troops Awareness Week Celebrated

To raise awareness of the ongoing need for basic lawn care and landscape services for families of deployed military personnel and veterans with service-related disabilities, Project EverGreen celebrated June 11-17, 2017 as National GreenCare for Troops Awareness Week.

The program, which celebrates its 11th year in 2017, has seen more than 11,000 military families and veterans, and more than 6,000 green industry professionals register to receive or provide these much needed volunteer services since the program was launched in 2006.

“These valuable services provide military families and wounded and disabled veterans with peace of mind and freedom to heal,” says Cindy Code, executive director of Project EverGreen. “A managed lawn and yard provides vital space for military personnel and veterans to recover and re-connect with their families.”

Project EverGreen Helps Turn the Table on Urban Blight In Detroit

Two Detroit city neighborhoods will soon receive much needed green space improvements as part of Project EverGreen's of "Healthy Turf. Healthy Kids." initiative. Plans are under way to install a playground in Warrendale, a western Detroit neighborhood; and to provide an extensive renovation of Pingree Park on the east side.

The Warrendale community is the recipient of Project EverGreen’s “Our Winning Green Spaces” contest. Barb and Joe Matney, who live in the neighborhood, nominated Warrendale because there is not a park within a mile in which kids can play. The park will be created on a vacant lot where a home once stood. The community has suffered from high unemployment, foreclosures and crime.

New Jersey and New York HTHK Projects Dedicated

Project EverGreen formally dedicated two of its most recent Healthy Turf. Healthy Kids. ™ projects when it cut the ribbon on the Hazlet (NJ) Youth Athletic League’s William B. Paterson Field and the Neighbors of Vega Baja community garden in East Harlem, New York City.

“With more than half of the population living in urban areas, it’s critical that neighborhood parks and community gardens are available for the health benefits and social well-being of kids and adults,” said Cindy Code, executive director of Project EverGreen. “Additionally, green spaces in cities work to sequester carbon and create oxygen for those living in the community. Project EverGreen works collaboratively with individuals, businesses and like-minded groups to renovate and restore green spaces.”

The in-kind donations of materials and labor from professional landscape contractor and supplier volunteers totaled more than $40,000.

Gratitude. A simple word yet when acted on, can stir positive feelings for all involved. People often feel a need to help others and a fulfillment in doing so. The act of gratitude often goes hand-in-hand with volunteering.

Project EverGreen's GreenCare for Troops and SnowCare for Troops initiatives deliver much needed complimentary lawn care, landscaping and snow removal services for military families and post 9/11 veterans with a service-connected disability.
