Giving Thanks This Holiday Season
By Catherine Stone, Public Housing DirectorThis year, coronavirus brought unexpected challenges and changes to our lives. Alaska Housing Finance Corporation's mission remains the same — to provide Alaskans access to safe, quality and affordable housing.
More than 12,000 Alaskans receive rental assistance. As the Public Housing Director at AHFC, I’m grateful for the opportunity and partnerships to help keep Alaskans safe at home during this season. Alaska Housing has 15 offices across the state of Alaska and serves diverse communities.
Keeping families safe at home in their communities is our focus. Specifically for Alaskans receiving rental assistance from public housing who have experienced loss of income due to COVID-19, our Safety Net Program provides financial support. Our Planning Department outside of Public Housing has stepped in and provided the Alaska Housing Relief Program that provided
financial support to more than 5,000 households that lost income due to the pandemic. We’ve also partnered with local communities — including Palmer, Wasilla, Sitka, Kenai, Soldotna, Homer, Kachemak and the Kenai Peninsula Borough whose local leadership used their funds to provide additional housing relief to their community residents. We recently had the opportunity to distribute $5 million of grants under HUD’s Emergency Solutions Grants program to help seven nonprofit organizations around Alaska provide rapid rehousing efforts
and homelessness prevention for vulnerable populations impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in community solutions to the challenges of today and to be a resource for all Alaskans. You can stay up-to-date with Alaska Housing news by following Alaska Housing on Facebook and visiting our blog for weekly articles and news.
Look for the next edition of HomeDelivery in February 2021. Wishing you and your loved ones a Happy Holidays.
Statewide Rent and Mortgage Relief ClearinghouseAs a challenging year comes to a close, Alaskans continue to struggle financially. Renters and homeowners are worried about making their housing payments, and landlords are concerned about keeping tenants in their properties. We launched a new website for Alaska Housing Relief. This resource for all Alaskans is a clearinghouse of housing relief programs across the state and provides important guidance to help Alaskans keep their housing secure. Whether you are a
renter, homeowner, or landlord — this website is made for you. Each section is designed to guide you to the information you need, such as relief programs, regulatory guidance, or legal aid.
Violence At Home? There May Be Help.Families are feeling the long-term impacts of daily life during a pandemic, and as winter sets in the challenges increase. While we are encouraged to stay at home to keep our communities safe and healthy, for anyone experiencing intimate partner violence this advice may put them at risk. If you or someone you know is facing these circumstances and in need of safe housing, the Empowering Choice Housing Program may offer a way out. Learn how this program can help families find safe housing for at least three years, and other resources available for those in need right now.
See a Great Loan Offer? Proceed With Caution.Holidays are approaching, and Alaskans are planning to purchase gifts for loved ones and other expenses are coming due. You may be receiving loan offers in your mailbox or email that look pretty good. This is the time of year when predatory lenders come out of hiding, and they’re very clever at tricking good people into making bad decisions. Be careful!
