Welcome to Stanford on the Moon Winter 2017 Newsletter
SOM Lunar Exhibit in September, 2017 and SOM Conference during 2017 Homecoming Reunion Weekend, October 12-15, 2017 - Five of the six teams participating in the 2017 Google Lunar XPrize indicated they plan to participate in our 2017 SOM Conference, themed ‘Who Will Win the Google Lunar XPrize?’, on Friday, October 13, 2017 from 3 pm – 5 pm. During the second half of the Conference, we plan to discuss the first year of the SOM Endowment Fund and its 2017 Award recipients, which will include the Stanford Student Observatory (SSO).
- The 5 participating teams were invited to and might participate in the First Stanford Lunar Exhibit which we are planning to open on campus, on a small scale in September, 2017.
- We are working with a group of the SOM Advisory Committee to organize this Lunar Exhibit which will be multi-disciplinary and will bring together a comprehensive approach to space and lunar exploration. The 2017 Lunar Exhibit is being planned to combine art, science and cultural aspects that relate to the Moon. We might include movies, books, paintings or poetry about the Moon.
- We expect to introduce Marc Tessier-Lavinge, Stanford’s new President to SOM’s Lunar Exhibit and the SOM Conference by Spring, 2017. We hope that his interest would help us finalize this year’s Lunar Exhibit and possibly plan a 2019 SOM Lunar Exhibit to celebrate Apollo @ 50.
- Please let us know if you would like to see specific items included in the 2017 SOM Lunar Exhibit at Stanford.
Other Goals SOM Would Like to Accomplish in 2017: - We are in the process of identifying the initial recipients as well as possible subsequent recipients of the Stanford on the Moon Endowment Fund Awards.
- We would like to develop a long range plan to work with Stanford University Professors and students in order to reach more students and faculty who are interested in Lunar, Space and Astronomy research.
New SOM Radio Interviews about Stanford on the Moon on KZSU, Stanford 90.1 FM: - KZSU, Stanford’s radio station will help spread the word about SOM Alumni Club through interviews about SOM and Lunar Exploration.
