Game Plan

What do you like the best about the big game? It might be the commercials, the actual game, or, if you’re like me, the food! Game day parties — whether it’s just you or a room full of fans — typically are weighted down with high-calorie and fat-laden foods that leave you feeling sluggish by half-time. This game-day Sunday, avoid a nutrition penalty with some healthier choices.

  • Drink low- or no-calorie drinks, steering clear of high-calorie beer, soda and other sugary beverages.
  • Opt for baked chips over the full-fat variety — you’ll be surprised how tasty the low-calorie versions can be, thanks to new chip-making technology.
  • Use low-fat or non-fat sour cream in dips; you won’t be able to tell the difference from the full-fat counterpart.
  • Serve plenty of salsa as a dip or topping for nachos — it’s low in calories and rich in vitamin C and health-boosting lycopene.
  • Set out a sandwich spread of roasted turkey or chicken, whole grain breads, tomato slices, sprouts, greens, pickles and low-fat mayo (rather than the standard fare of less nutritious heavy meats and plain rolls).
  • Offer freshly cut veggies such as celery, carrots and cucumbers — these crisp veggies can help you skip the chips by satisfying your need for something crunchy.
