The Academic Senate is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the Stanback-Stroud Diversity Award, sponsored again this year by the Foundation for California Community Colleges. This award seeks to honor the cadre of committed faculty who consistently rise to meet the challenges our students face. Serving the most diverse student population of any higher education system in the country, the California Community Colleges System is largely comprised of demographic groups that have traditionally faced barriers to education and are often underprepared when they reach the classroom. It is the challenge and responsibility of California community college faculty to demonstrate the sustained attention and support necessary to fully engage and excite these students. This prestigious award acknowledges an individual or group that is exceptional in contributing to the advancement of intercultural harmony, equity, and campus diversity at their college. Register Today: Transfer Webinars - ADT and UCTP Alignment The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges, in agreement with the Academic Senate of the California State University and the University of California Academic Senate, is proposing the alignment of seven existing Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT) with existing UC Transfer Pathways. The seven proposed degrees are Anthropology, Business, Economics, History, Mathematics, Philosophy, and Sociology. During this webinar, the presenters will provide information about how each ADT aligns, or would align with a slight modification, to an existing UC Transfer Pathway. The goal is for these aligned degrees to be included with the recently approved UC Transfer Pathways pilot degrees in chemistry and physics, as well as the potential alignment of engineering degrees between the CCCs and the UC systems. The alignment of chemistry, physics and engineering requires legislative action to unite the two pathways at this time but input from discipline faculty across all systems clearly recommends the UCTP for chemistry, physics, and engineering. This would result in 10 aligned pathways clearly communicating to students the requirements for transfer to either of our intersegmental partners. There will be two webinars: The January 22, 2020 webinar will provide initial information and serve as a venue for attendees to ask questions and provide feedback on the provided draft alignments. The February 4, 2020 webinar will be a follow-up to provide more information based on questions and feedback from the January 22 webinar. Additional information and how to register for each webinar can be accessed via the links below: Jan 22, 2020 2:00 PM - Register Now Register Now: The Faculty and Staff Diversification Symposium The Faculty and Staff Diversification Symposium will be held on March 19-20, 2020 in Sacramento. Be on the lookout for the implementation of new ideas based on your feedback at institutes this Spring! Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Ygnacio “Nash” Flores, Rio Hondo College Rio Hondo College Faculty leads the way for the newest Academic Discipline Dr. Ygnacio “Nash” Flores is an amazing colleague, who is deserving of recognition for his many contributions to the Rio Hondo College campus community and the community college system at large. He is an innovative faculty member in Administration of Justice and Homeland Security, who has led a combined effort resulting in the California Community College Board of Governors recently approving Homeland Security as the newest academic discipline in the California Community College Disciplines Handbook. He has worked tirelessly to build and promote Rio Hondo College's Homeland Security program, along with supporting students in Rio Hondo’s other nationally recognized public safety programs. Using his decades of military experience, administrative experience in community college, and a strong equity-minded framework for teaching, Nash has shaped the new Homeland Security program at Rio Hondo to meet the demands of a growing field. A new labor market report from the Los Angeles/Orange County Center of Excellence indicates that in the region about 2,900 jobs will be created annually in homeland security related career fields, making it a high-demand field of study, and Nash has been instrumental in the building of a successful program at Rio Hondo, which offers a Certificate of Achievement and an Associate of Science in Homeland Security. Nash has also written The Pedagogy of Violent Extremism, been a co-columnist with PA Times, contributed chapters to three books on homeland security, and has two additional book chapters pending publication. Nash also makes strong connections with his students and encourages them to have fun while discovering their potential. Thank you, Nash, for all you do for our students! Take a Brain Break! As the semester gets underway, treat yourself to a good chuckle! Share them with your students! The past, the present and the future all walked into a bar. It was tense. What’s the difference between a cat and a comma? Why is the corner always the hottest part of the room? What do you call a ruler, protractor and a compass all hanging out together? Never trust an atom.. they make up everything. Upcoming Events January 2020
