I went home on my lunch hour last week and there was a message on my answering machine. The message stated, “I am George Taylor IRS Agent with the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS. We are filing a petition against you in court for not paying your taxes and to avoid being arrested and put in jail please call the following number.” I was scared to death! Is this really the IRS? I always pay my taxes. What should I do?

Personal Tax: Tax Identity Theft – IRS Cyber Attack Leaves Thousands Vulnerable

This year the IRS was victim to a cyber attack that compromised the private information of more than 100,000 taxpayers.  Even prior to this attack, thousands of taxpayers have been victims of tax related identity theft.  Thieves use the private information of taxpayers to file returns and claim refunds from federal and state governmental agencies.  When the real taxpayer attempts to file their return, it is rejected because the agency already received a tax return.  Taxpayers need to be aware of their risks and the steps they need to take in the event of identity theft.
