Can we start saying the S word yet? Is it… Spring? Or just wishful thinking? Mother Nature may still have a few cold days left for us, but your shortcut to spring lies in a glass of this week’s wine, the Te Whare Ra (or TWR for short) Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand. The name is Maori and pronounced ‘Tea – Farre – Ra’, which may not be so easy to say, but the wine is oh so easy to drink. This savvy Sauv Blanc will light up your palate and get you into a spring state of mind.
Tasting Notes: 100% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2018 ‘Tea – Farre – Ra’ is very fragrant, showing citrus and lemongrass which continue on the palate along with zesty lime and fleshy tropical fruit. A lingering mineral note carries the finish through to your next sip.
Enjoy With: Mussels, oysters, sushi, herb roasted chicken and all things involving goat’s cheese; salads, sauces, and cheese boards.
Style: An extra-dry, medium-bodied and fruity white.
Terroir/Region: The TWR Sauvignon Blanc comes from 4 subregions of Marlborough, each bringing their own elements to the final wine. Two vineyards in the cooler Awatere Valley provide lively acidity, texture, and structure, while two vineyards in the Wairau Valley add ripe, fleshy tropical fruit notes, stone fruit flavours, and a streak of minerality.
Producer: Anna and Jason Flowerday fell in love with Te Whare Ra. The vineyards, some of the oldest in the region, were in need of care and many thought that they should be replanted. Anna and Jason began the painstaking work of reviving the vines and converting them to organic and biodynamic practices. They feel they make their living from the soil, so the soil should be living as well.
