St. Patrick’s Day has just passed, but we want to keep thinking green, albeit sustainability instead of shamrocks! Put down the green beer and pick up Château Tanunda Grand Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2019. The 132 year-old winery knows something about sustainability – especially concerning its vineyards and winery. With a long history, a green future and a delicious Cabernet, we may have to attribute finding this wine to a bit of Irish luck!
Tasting Notes: Lifted aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and vanilla are joined on the palate by vibrant cassis and dark cherry, mocha, oak spice and fine-grained tannins. The finish is long and smooth, a characteristic gained from 18 months in French oak.
Enjoy With: Everything off the grill! Burgers, steak, pork chops or chicken with barbeque sauce all work. This is also a great wine for braised/stewed meats, hard cheeses or as a delicious sip on its own.
Style: A soft, rich, full-bodied red wine.
Terroir/Region: The Barossa valley is one of Australia’s most famed wine regions, and the region of the country’s modern wine-legends as well as those of the past making new waves, like Château Tanunda. The winery owns some of the oldest living vines in the world, including many ‘centurians’ (100 year-old vines) and even older vines planted in 1850 and 1858 which are still used in its wines!
Producer: Recognizing Château Tanunda’s long history and envisioning its sustainable future is the job of the Gerber family, the Château’s owners over the past 20+ years. Under their stewardship, the winery now recycles 100% of its water and is powered entirely by renewable energy. They also look beyond their own vineyards by raising funds for coral reef restoration and creating wines to raise awareness.
