Wine of the Weekend

Licenciado Rioja Reserva DOCa 2016

This time of year is great for continuing to enjoy the outdoors.  As the evenings get a bit cooler, grab a blanket and a glass of a full-bodied red wine.  The wines from Rioja are always a good place to look for wines that deliver rich and warm flavours, usually with a bit of bottle age.

Tasting Notes: Made from only Tempranillo, Licenciado Reserva creates a delicious and elegant expression of dark berries, plum and spices, with vanilla and cocoa accents from the use of American and French oak.

Enjoy With: Grilled red meats like lamb cutlets or chorizo sausages, south-west style barbeque and traditional Spanish dishes like paella, jamon (ham) and semi-hard cheeses like Manchego.

Style: A dry, smooth, full-bodied red wine.

Terroir/Region: Bodegas Burgo Viejo and its vineyards are located near the eastern edge of the Rioja region of Spain. The vineyards are pressed between the Ebro River to the northeast and the slopes of the sierra of Monte Yerga to the Southwest. This unique placement brings with it diverse soils and microclimates that give the wines from Burgo Viejo their unique qualities and terroir.

Producer: Burgo Viejo began when 6 farming families combined their efforts to achieve their dream of opening a winery. These families owned their own vineyards and were able to focus on growing the finest quality grapes possible to create their wines. Today, bottles of Burgo Viejo can be found on dinner tables from Japan to Denmark to yours!
