Nugget’s own 2nd Lt. James O’Neill – Clothing Drive

Back in 1999, James O’Neill joined the Nugget family and worked as an associate in our Davis and Vacaville stores. Our good friend James is now serving in the military in Fallujah, Iraq, as a 2nd Lieutenant with the U.S. Marine Corps. In addition to many other duties, James and his team have worked hard to rebuild pipelines for drinking water and to reconstruct schools that have been destroyed and damaged. James has forged a special bond with many Iraqi children who are in dire need of warm clothing this winter. Our Woodland, Davis and Vacaville stores are currently collecting clothing for “James’ Kids”; if you have any gently used winter clothing (all kids’ sizes are welcome), your generous donation is greatly appreciated by James, his family, and, of course, the children in need. Donation bins are set up in our stores — please ask any associate for assistance.

Game Day!

Featured Recipe: “Bowl Day” Chili

Bowl Day Chili

Simple. Hearty. Spicy. Stick to your ribs.

These are all ways to describe our Bowl Day Chili. Put it on the stove in the morning and keep it warm until kick off. This is a macho bowl of "red" to chow down on as you and your friends yell at the TV.

— Jeff Clark, Nugget Markets chef de cuisine

Nugget’s Spinach Dip in a Sourdough Round

Spinach Dip Sour Rounds

Nugget’s house-made spinach dip is perfectly seasoned, and water chestnuts give it a little crunch. Use it as a dip, or try it as a spread on your favorite sandwich. We suggest serving it the classic way, in a sourdough bread bowl, baked fresh in Nugget’s Bakery.

It’s Not a Party Without some Wings

Crazy Hot Wings

Health Notes with Dr. LizDr Liz

Chili – Hot and Healthy!

Surprise! A bowl of chili can be one of the most nutritious foods to warm you up this winter. Typically thought of as a diner food loaded with fat, chili actually contains a wealth of health-boosting ingredients, including beans, tomatoes, onions and chili peppers. Here’s the rundown on chili’s hot and healthy attributes:

  • Packed with fiber: A cup of chili provides 9 grams of fiber (more than most whole grain cereals). Chili beans also supply soluble fiber known for its cholesterol-lowering abilities. Research shows this type of fiber helps control blood sugar levels by slowing the entry of carbohydrates into circulation.
  • Protein-rich: With 15 grams of protein (30 percent of the Daily Value) per one-cup serving, chili is a meal on its own. When making chili, select lean meats (sirloin, turkey or pork) or opt for vegetarian style to keep saturated fat levels low.
  • Hot factor: Chili peppers’ heat comes from capsacian, a compound that researchers are discovering may have health benefits. Studies show capsacian helps you burn calories faster by stimulating your metabolism. Also, capsacian may help you breathe easier.
  • Vitamin bounty: Many standard ingredients in chili, such as tomatoes, onions, garlic, and peppers, make it a vitamin and mineral powerhouse. These veggies supply Vitamin C, crucial for immune health, and the mineral potassium, which helps you maintain a healthy blood pressure. Meat chili also supplies a wealth of the minerals iron and zinc, needed for healthy circulation and growth in children.
