Welcome to Stanford on the Moon Fall 2016 Newsletter

SOM Advisory Committee Meeting Set for October 21, 2016 from 3 – 5 pm during the 2016 Homecoming Reunion Weekend

  • We plan to hold the Stanford on the Moon Advisory Committee Meeting on Friday, October 21, 2016 from 3 pm – 5 pm. We will meet at Tresidder Union. We expect to be joined by 5 SOM Advisory Committee members as well as Stanford Professors Bruce Macintosh and Marco Pavone.
  • We will attempt to identify possible recipients of the first Stanford on the Moon Endowment Fund Award, which will be distributed in Spring, 2017. We will discuss suggestions made by SOM Advisory Committee Members, Henning Roedel and Grant Anderson, and will consider other recommendations during the meeting.
  • Discuss how to introduce Stanford on the Moon to Stanford’s 11th President Marc Tessier-Lavigne, who succeeded President John Hennessy on September 1, 2016.
  • Discuss new outreach efforts to increase SOM membership.
 

SOM New Publishing Initiative:
Would You Like to Publish Your Articles about Space with Stanford on the Moon?

  • We invite you to send us your articles and comments about space:
  • Starting with our SOM Winter 2017 Newsletter, we plan to publish articles and blog posts about space, space exploration as well as the Moon, that are submitted by members of Stanford on the Moon. We will also post these articles on our website. Please email your articles to stanfordonthemoon@spaceagepub.com
 

SOM Social Media Initiative:

  • We are considering working with volunteers to establish Regional and International Chapters for SOM. Sarah Taylor is the first volunteer to work with SOM on social media.
  • If you are interested in starting a SOM Chapter in your area, please email stanfordonthemoon@spaceagepub.com
 

Goals SOM Would Like to Accomplish in the Next Year:

  • We are in the process of identifying the initial recipients as well as possible subsequent recipients of the Stanford on the Moon Endowment Fund Awards.
  • We would like to develop a long range plan to work with Stanford University Professors and students in order to reach more students and faculty who are interested in lunar and space research.
  • We will continue to keep in contact with the teams participating in the Google Lunar X Prize and have had many meetings with them.
 

New SOM Radio Interviews about Stanford on the Moon on KZSU, Stanford 90.1 FM:

  • KZSU, Stanford’s radio station is producing radio shows about Lunar Exploration and Stanford on the Moon. They will interview some of our Advisory Committee Members to help spread the word about Stanford on the Moon.
  • The first interview was recorded in October, 2016 with Lois Driggs Aldrin; it will be broadcast in November and we will send you links to the audio of the interview. We would like to thank Lois for her time and for this interview.
