Preventive Health Taskforces: Help shape AMA (WA) advocacy

The WA Preventive Health Summit on 2 March 2018 resulted in a call to action for government to make real commitments and achieve concrete outcomes in obesity and alcohol.

It was acknowledged that clinical leadership, along with robust research, health policy and media influence will be essential in curtailing the poor health outcomes related to obesity and alcohol.

The AMA (WA) has been asked to contribute to a collaborative taskforce for both obesity and alcohol, with short and medium-term priorities for action. Along with public health input, the AMA (WA) will provide clinical expertise and representation in the media.

We are seeking AMA (WA) member involvement in the development of strategies around alcohol and obesity.

If you have expertise in these areas and are interested in contributing to AMA (WA) public health advocacy, please contact Dr Katharine Noonan via email.

WAIRC Upholds AMA (WA) Position

The WA Industrial Relations Comission has handed down its decision in the dispute between the AMA (WA) and the East Metropolitan Health Service with respect to the employment status of one of it's long-term medical practitioners.

The AMA successfully argued that the practitioner's latest appoitnemnt was an open-ended appointment, equivalent to a permanent appointment.

Whilst the decision of the Commission is case specific, the AMA (WA) urges all memebrs to check their contractual status before signing any new contracts.

Telehealth Awareness Week

Neurologist Dr Nick Lawn says telehealth allows clinicians to offer the best practice patient-centred care.

Dr Lawn has used telehealth for his patients from the moment it was available and said the rapid development of the technology in WA had significantly benefitted patients.

He said it gave them a reprieve from often-difficult travel, and also offered a best-practice model of care.

"It would be near-on impossible to get these people in the one room without telehealth. This kind of multi-disciplinary care is ideal for country patients who need to be managed primarily by their local GP.”

Healthcare professionals can join in the conversation during Telehealth Awareness Week 2018 by sharing stories about how appointments via telehealth have helped their patients save time, money and stress. On social media, use the hashtag #telehealthwa
