Wine of the Weekend

San Marzano Primitivo, Puglia 2018

Primitivo in Italy is the same grape as Zinfandel in California.  We’re not sure why things are so complicated in the world of wine!  What is not complicated is that Primitivo from Puglia is a great value summer red to enjoy with flavourful foods.  On hot summer days, keep in mind when they say you should serve reds at room temperature, they really mean 16 degrees Celsius, so put your reds in the fridge for 10-15 minutes for maximum enjoyment.

Tasting Notes: This Primitivo is a deep ruby red colour with violet reflections. You’ll find a complex bouquet with plum and cherry notes with spices, hints of rosemary and vanilla on the palate. It’s a robust wine which is smooth, balanced and easy to drink.

Enjoy With: Take-out from your favourite Indian Restaurant.

Style: A dry, medium-bodied, fruity red wine.

Terroir/Region: Wines from Puglia are the product of a diverse landscape. Half of Italy’s olive oil is produced in the dry heat of Puglia. The warm climate and fertile soil make it easy to grow almost anything. Puglia is surrounded by water on three sides allowing cool breezes off the Mediterranean to moderate vineyard temperatures.

Producer: San Marzano winery was founded in 1962 by a group of enterprising wine growers who wanted to showcase the best wines that could be produced in the region of Puglia.  The efforts of this original group have grown and evolved, with San Marzano today being one of the leading wineries in the region.
