As previously mentioned, we are unable to discern which members have completed our 2019 Members' Survey. If you have given us your feedback, we'd like to thank you for that and for your patience & understanding with our global reminders! If you haven't been able to get to the survey yet, please note that it is closing at 10am (AEST) this Monday July 8.

We cannot emphasise strongly enough how the survey results will guide the way TASA invests its resources over the coming years so we really would like to hear what you want from your association (if you haven't told us already!).

A PhD - Better than Playing Football for you Country?

Submitted by Martin Forsey: A quirky sort of story about a former professional footballer studying at Cardiff Metropolitan University who coached the university football team in exchange for free tuition for his Masters. The team was bottom of the heap in Wales at the time and this week is travelling to Luxembourg to play a Europa League game .The journalist quotes Dr Christian Edwards - the coach - as follows:

Edwards spent four years on the latter (PhD) and his doctoral work – “examining the sociological significance of humour and how it is used as a critical component in the negotiation of coaching relationships” – means far more to him than representing his country and everything that came with his career as a footballer, including the David Beckham, Alan Shearer and Fernando Redondo shirts that are packed away somewhere in his loft. “I’ve got senior Welsh caps, played in the Premier League etc, but that [the PhD] is the best thing I’ve ever done, because I wasn’t expected to succeed in education,” Edwards says.

NextGen Migration Ethnicity and Multiculturalism Symposium

A one-day research symposium. New Zealand Sociology journal is always on the look out for high quality submissions to review for publication.  If you are writing about New Zealand or have research findings of relevance to New Zealanders, send your manuscript today to be considered for 2020 issues. Archiving qualitative research projects in the sociology of education and youth – call for proposals

Professor Julie McLeod and Dr Kate O’Connor (University of Melbourne) are seeking proposals from sociology of education, childhood and youth researchers interested in archiving data from their qualitative research projects within a new repository housed within the Australian Data Archive (ADA). They have received a grant from the Australian Research Data Commons (Transformative Data Collections scheme) to support this work. Funding of up to $4000 per project is available to assist in preparing materials for digital archiving. We will provide guidance and support in setting up your archive, including protocols for anonymisation, access conditions, development of appropriate metadata and ethical and methodological guidelines. Expressions of interest are due to Dr Kate O’Connor by COB 12 July 2019 and projects will need to be archived by 30 September 2019. Please see our website for further details.

Accessing Online Materials

From March last year, the list of available Sage Sociology full-text collection online journals jumped from 36 to 91 peer-reviewed journals encompassing over 63,000 articles.

To access those journals, as well as the Sage Research Methods Collection & the Taylor and Francis Full Text Collection, please click here for instructions, if needed.

Gift Memberships

Gift memberships are available with TASA.  If you would like to purchase a gift membership, please email the following details through to the TASA Office:

1. First name of gift recipient;
2. email address of gift recipient;
3. the membership category you are gifting (see the Membership Categories & Fees section of TASAweb);
4. the cost of the membership; and
5. who the Membership Invoice should be made out to.

Upon receiving the above details, TASA will email the recipient with full details on how they can take up the gift membership.  You can view an example of that email in both Word (39kb) and Pdf (159kb) formats. You will receive an invoice, via email, after the recipient completes the online membership form.

Newsletter Submissions

We encourage you to support your colleagues by sharing details of your latest publications with them via this newsletter. No publication is too big or too small. Any mention of sociology is of value to our association, and to the discipline, so please do send through details of your latest publication (fully referenced) for the next newsletter, to the TASA Office. Usually, the newsletter is disseminated every Thursday morning.

To ensure your publications listed in this newsletter, & subsequently on TASAweb, are referenced correctly by third party users, it would be greatly appreciated if you could email your publications to TASA's Office in a referenced format.
