The mistake: Not allocating time for long-term thinking when there’s plenty to do for today.


It’s hard to get where you’re going if you don’t know where you want to end up. Not setting long-term goals can leave your organization blind to new opportunities.

Strategy versus tasks
Day-to-day marketing tasks pile up. There’s always more “to do.” But it’s also important to take a step back and think about your brand in the long term. Long-term goals will impact what’s important to do today … and tomorrow.

Where do you see your organization in 1, 5 or 10 years? It’s tough to plan more than three years out with everything changing so quickly. But the exercise of considering what’s possible and setting your sights high is very valuable.

Short-term tactics support long-term goals
Upgrade your website? Launch a new product? Build an AdWords campaign? Create a refreshed recruitment suite? Improve packaging? Implement inbound marketing? Increase your social media presence? All of these tactics can work to engage audiences and build recognition. If they’re working, don’t stop. But also set aside time to imagine how much further you can reach.

Getting started
So many choices. Online or offline? Email or direct mail? Advertising or SEO? It can be difficult to plan long-term and choose the right path. It takes fresh eyes and an objective perspective.
