NOTICE OF ELECTIONS

Elections are coming! In week 8 of this term you will be electing your LUSU Full Time Officer Team, NUS delegates, and in some bye elections your Cross Campus Officers and College JCR Officers.

Why not come along to the open talk Be an Officer on Wednesday 15th Feb, Bowland North Seminar room 23 at 5pm to find out more information? Any student can be an officer you don't have to have been one before!

Nominations for Full Time Officers will open at 10am, Friday 17th Feb (Week 5) and close 4pm Friday 24th Feb (Week 6) Nominations for Cross Campus Officers, NUS delegates and JCR officers will open in week 7 
Candidates for Full Time Officers will be able to campaign in weeks 7 and 8 with voting at the end of week 8! Other positions will be able to campaign in week 8, with voting also at the end of week 8

This Wednesday at Jinxed! we're giving each of you the identity of one half of a famous couple; find your other half inside and get a photo key ring with them in the club!  Friday night is the return of Bang Tidy Friday - so get your glad rags on and strike a pose once again in our photo op area.  Saturday night sees some sizzling added extras inside to vamp up your night.  Keep your eyes on the Facebook page for details...


Battle of the Bands Heats

Heat 2 = Thursday in COUNTY week 5
Heat 3 =  Friday in GRIZEDALE week 6
Heat 4 = Wednesday in BOWLAND week 7
Final = Saturday in CARTMEL week 8

Each heat will begin at 8 pm including the Final. Each band will be given  a 20 minute slot to showcase their talents and ONE band will go through from each heat to the final in week 8. At the end of the heats we will have the winners from each week + a wildcard which the judges will decide.

The winner will receive a headline slot at this year’s Campus Festival as well as a chance to perform at Beach Break Live 2012. Make sure you get down to support your favourite band!


Last Minute Schools Volunteering Place!!

We have one space open for a Primary Book Circles Volunteer at Westgate Primary School in Morecambe on Wednesday afternoons at 1.15pm. You would be working with Year 4 pupils, planning and delivering fun and exciting activities based around a ‘Captain Underpants’ book. Sessions would last 45mins to an hour and you would be working with another volunteer. It’s bound to be loads of fun, and great experience in schools too! Email Laura if you are interested.

Are you a Schools Volunteer? Considering a Career in Teaching?

LUSU involve are holding a special afternoon for Schools volunteers, running sessions on activity planning for schools, employability strategies and effective job hunting, and a workshop with James Burch, PGCE Coordinator at University of Cumbria. So if you are looking for inspiration, need some ideas or have some questions about PGCE applications and courses, this afternoon is for you!
Wednesday 15th February, 3pm-6pm, Frankland Lecture Theatre.


International Students’ Association

In order to promote integration and cultural understanding at Lancaster, LUSU are looking into the possibility of creating an International Students’ Association. We will be having an open forum on Wednesday Week 5 in Training Room 3 in the Human Resources Building (Between University House and the Chaplaincy) from 1pm until 4pm where anyone can drop in at any point and discuss ideas for how this might work to link LUSU, the colleges, societies as well as how it might help international engagement and representation. Please come along, everyone is welcome!

The deadlines for the Green Lancaster residential trips are fast approaching, so if you want to get away, get in touch! The deadline for the Middlewood Study Centre residential trip, on the 3rd and 4th of March, is very close - 9:00AM Monday 13th, so if you are interested please email us.
Similarly, the deadline for the Isle of Eigg trip taking place from 13th- 21st April, is 9:00AM 17th February. If you want to get involved please also email us or drop into the Green Lancaster office as soon as possible.

Are you interested in film?

Do you want to learn key skills to make your own work, or just come along to watch and meet new people?

The Film Society are planning a Film Festival in Summer term, and will be holding a series of workshops which concentrate on key areas in the next few weeks. The workshops take place every Wednesday afternoon at 3 pm in Bowland North SR 16/17, and the next one is ‘Preproduction and Camera Work’.

MASS Charity Football Match

The Maths and Stats Society (MASS) are holding a charity football match: undergrads vs postgrads & department on Sunday 19th Feb 3-5pm on the astroturf.
The match is raising money for Cancer Research UK and Amnesty International and tea and coffee will be available for a small donation.


The Lancaster Athletics Cup, hosted by Panthers Athletics Club

The Lancaster Athletics Cup will bring together students from all over the North in a brand new tournament that is set to pave the way for a future Athletics League. Do you want to compete? Are you interested in athletics? Come down to one of our training sessions to become part of one of the biggest developments in Lancaster sport in recent years. We now have a weekly indoor session with Personal Trainer Russell Boorer, as well as a track session and two other outdoor sessions in the run up to the event!

RAG Week

RAG (Raising and Giving) Week is coming in week 6! It’s a fun packed week full of different activities, nights out and great discounts! All money raised will go towards three chosen charities: WaterAid, Cancer Research and Alexandra House.

There’s lots of fantastic things planned this year including a Fashion Show on Tuesday of week 6 in the Great Hall, you can also look out for the RAG society in the Carleton and at the Sugarhouse throughout the week.

Look out for the RAG Exec selling bands on Tuesday week 5 in Alex Square.


Sainsbury's Closure

Sainsbury’s Lancaster will be closed from Tuesday 14th February to Wednesday 22nd February in order to complete the store refurbishment works.

This will mean that the Sainsbury’s free bus will be cancelled on Wednesday 15th and Wednesday 22nd February.

Concert | SALOME WITH SOUND AFFAIRS

The controversial and influential film Salome will be screened to a new score by Charles Barber at Live at LICA this week. Salomé is a visual feast with stunning, art nouveau costumes and sets. This version is accompanied by an assortment of drums, tambourines, castanets, cymbals and Tibetan singing bowls. The music is performed by four percussionists, playing from two alloy towers on either side of the screen. A rare chance to see a jewel of the silent movie world.
