Wine of the Weekend

Mountadam Five-Fifty Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

King Cabernet reigns supreme at the LCBO and around the world! Cabernet Sauvignon is the LCBO’s best selling varietal as well as the world’s most planted grape, and it’s not hard to see why. It grows well in warm and cool climates, its thicker skins help ward off pests and diseases in the vineyard, and the final wines take to oak aging well, showing off a wonderful balance of berry flavour, spice, tannin and acidity. This week’s wine comes from Australia: Mountadam Five-Fifty Cabernet Sauvignon sports Cabernet’s signature balance as well as great depth at a steal of a price.

Tasting Notes: This deep ruby, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon boasts dark plum and berry fruit, bold spices, sage and tobacco notes. Fine tannins and soft acidity give it a smooth, easy-drinking mouth feel, carried through the long finish.

Enjoy With: Roasted red meats like steak or burgers, aged cheddar cheeses or as a great sip on its own.

Style: A full-bodied, smooth red wine.

Terroir / Region: Mountadam’s Barossa vineyards are some of the highest in this region, with the winery itself sitting at 550m above sea level. The cooler climate created by the elevation helps Mountadam slowly ripen its grapes resulting in building big, juicy flavours in its wines.

Producer: Mountadam prides itself on only producing ‘estate wines’, which are wines grown in vineyards owned by the winery. This practice ensures that winery staff has a careful hand in every element of making the wine, from vine to glass.

Availability: The 2017 Mountadam Five-Fifty Cabernet Sauvignon is available in the Vintages section of your local LCBO and online now! All Hail King Cab!
