Welcome to this special PDST Technology in Education email newsletter!

Safer Internet Day 2013 promises to be the most exciting instalment yet of the global internet safety initiative. Celebrated in dozens of countries, SID2013 is the tenth anniversary of the awareness raising event, which this year aims to promote a "Connect with Respect" theme.

In Ireland, Webwise.ie, the Irish Internet Safety Awareness Centre, which is part of the PDST Technology in Education, is coordinating efforts among all stakeholders.

Launch of SaferInternetDay.ie

internet safety imageLast week saw the launch of www.SaferInternetDay.ie. The site is a hub for parents, teachers and the general public. It has a range of information including SID themed activity ideas for parents/teachers, information about the new module of the Garda School Programme and all the events being planned by our stakeholders.

Tell Us: Your SID2013 Plans

internet safety imageThe Safer Internet Day movement requires input from all schools, teachers and students. That's why this year we want to hear what you are planning to share it with the internet safety community.

To contribute to SID2013, share your plans with SaferInternetDay.ie via the site's "Tell Us" function, and your events will be listed on the site.

Watch Your Space: The Bystander Advice

internet safety imageThis year's SID2013 campaign targets teen bystanders who witness instances of online bullying. The Watch Your Space: It's Up To Us campaign will encourage secondary schools pupils to positively intervene when they see cyberbullying in an effort to show solidarity with victims and stamp out cyberbullying.

SID2013: Internet Safety Advice for Parents

internet safety imageEach generation has its obsession. This generation's is the internet. As a parent, you want to keep your child safe always. It's natural to be concerned about internet usage because we've all come across content no youngster should see.

But that should not hold you back from allowing your child to access the web in a safe and secure way. Some 98% of young people use the internet, and just under half of these use it every day to make friends, play games, download music and do their homework.

Free Internet Safety online course for teachers

CPD imageTo help your preparations for SID 2013, why not try our short 40 minute online course, Internet Safety in School & Classroom? You will need a Teaching Council Registration Number and a Scoilnet Account to enrol.
