Dr Michael Gannon re-elected as AMA (WA) President

AMA (WA) President Dr Michael Gannon has been re-elected for a second one-year term.

Dr Gannon, an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, and who was first elected as State President in June last year, was re-elected to the top position unopposed.

“It is an honour to represent the medical profession and to fight for public health for WA. It is an even greater honour to be elected to the position a second time,” Dr Gannon said.

“The past year has seen a number of positive results for health in WA, and it gives me great pride to have contributed in a range of ways to health policy in our state," he said.

Ambulance ramping ban bad for health: AMA (WA)

AMA (WA) President Dr Michael Gannon has spoken out against Health Minister Dr Kim Hames' plan to ban ambulance ramping, arguing that the idea would not fix patient wait times and would only increase pressure on hospital staff.

Dr Gannon said that increased ramping times were symptomatic of WA's hospital bed shortage and the only cure was to invest in public health.

Dr Gannon said that while the ban would take pressure off paramedics, it would only increase pressure on hospital staff.

"You can't keep asking the doctors and nurses who work in hospitals to do the same amount with less," he said.

AMA (WA) wins award at National Conference

The AMA (WA)'s work on the Part-Time Portal was recognised at this year's Federal AMA National Conference, earning the Association an award in the 'Most Innovative Use of Website or New Media' category.

The judges said the Part-time Doctor Portal showed initiative and vision in using an online service to fulfil an unmet need.

Considering Western Australia’s vast size and the enormous distances between its communities, having hospitals and junior doctors engage online through the portal helps bridge these great expanses and unite the AMA (WA) community.

Special mention goes to the Doctors-in-Training Committee and AMA (WA) Membership Manager Caela Del-Prete for getting this initiative off the ground and ready to use.
