Last month two critically important planning retreats were held at Wapiti Farm.
On February 7-8, the Deans reviewed the 2010 parochial reports and determined that the Diocese is facing a financial crisis that threatens our mission. The hard facts paint a daunting picture:
More than 60 of our 141 churches can no longer afford a full-time priest. The mandated salary compensation levels are often being observed in the breech as clergy work full-time after their pay is reduced to part-time. Fourteen churches are now paired and sharing a priest.
In 2010 more than 60 of our churches – most of whom still have a full-time priest – spent more than they received in pledge, plate, rental, investment, and other income, probably meaning that they drew down their endowment principal to meet property, personnel, and program costs.
