Agnew::Beck welcomes a new team member

A big welcome to Lila Hobbs, who recently joined the Agnew::Beck team as an Associate and will be assisting with SPF SIG training opportunities over the next year. Lila has worked for two State legislators, has studied abroad (in Scotland as well as South Africa), and has even worked as a kayaking guide right here in Alaska. Lila will be helping us as we put together the training sessions to be offered over the course of the year, so you will likely start receiving emails from her about upcoming training opportunities. Be sure and welcome her if you meet her at the Fall training!

Fall Training September 17-19!

By now you are probably all finalizing your travel plans for the upcoming Fall grantee conference in Anchorage. The Community Prevention Support Team is excited to be part of this event and will be particularly involved with sessions in which:

  • you will get to share ideas about ways to continue your momentum on prevention work once the SPF SIG grant comes to a close;
  • you can think about the many ways that 4-letter word, "data," actually touches all of our lives every single day, and how you can use it to keep your project momentum going;
  • you have an opportunity to hear updates from and ask questions of the State staff, the State Evaluation team, and the Community Prevention Support Team.

We look forward to reconnecting with everyone in two weeks!

Updates from your fellow grantees

From Elizabeth in Fairbanks:

"Amy Bollaert, the Coalition Coordinator for the Fairbanks Prevention Coalition, was able to attend the CADCA training in Austin, Texas this year! The days were packed full of insightful information on how to build a successful coalition, how to energize current community members, and building knowledge of what is needed in a coalition. CADCA really reached out and came up with great training tools for all types and sizes of projects. This training is highly recommended for all who can attend in the future!"

From Esther in Homer:

"Here are a few things going on:

  • Gave a presentation at the local school district in-service about ACEs, alcohol use, and suicide prevention;
  • Preparing to launch a PhotoVoice project in the schools. Students who participate in the project will fulfill their 30-hour senior community service requirement;
  • Working with students at the alternative high school to develop a youth resource guide;
  • Planning to launch our Positive Community Norms campaign, called 'Just the Facts,' at our health fair on November 2."

It's always great to hear about so much progress being made in alcohol prevention efforts. Keep sending your community's news our way and we'll share it in the next newsletter!

Media Advocacy Template

At the recent grantee teleconference on August 27, our guest presenter, Northwest Strategies, talked about a template they use with tobacco grantees for planning media advocacy efforts. Afterward they shared this template with us. You can find it here: Media Advocacy Plan Presented by Northwest Strategies

In addition, the full teleconference, including the presentation, is available via Adobe Connect, here: August 2013 Cohort Teleconference: Media Campaign Presentation by Northwest Strategies
