Our May newsletter Our spring Fresh Air newsletter is now available. See what we’ve been up to and get the latest news in lung cancer. May is Lung Cancer Hope MonthLUNGevity established May as Lung Cancer Hope Month to celebrate the incredible strides in research and survivorship for the lung cancer community. Each year, we have more reasons to be hopeful—more treatments are being approved, more people are being diagnosed earlier, the community of advocates is growing stronger, and many people are living longer and better with the disease. YOU can get involved and help us celebrate this Lung Cancer Hope Month. Find out how. Introducing LUNGevity’s Community Champions ProgramLUNGevity’s new Community Champions program identifies and shines a light on community leaders whose work in engaging vulnerable communities, or opportunity populations, with lung cancer programs exemplifies best practices and can inspire others. Karriem Watson, DHS, MS, MPH, is LUNGevity’s inaugural Community Champion, selected for his dedication to addressing the needs of Chicago’s neighborhoods at risk for lung cancer. Dr. Watson’s research and publications are deeply rooted in community engagement, health equity, and expanding clinical trial access to underrepresented groups. We know others will be inspired by his drive to ensure quality cancer care for all. Subscribe to End Lung CancerLUNGevity has launched a new way to fund hope for those living with lung cancer: Subscribe to End Lung Cancer. You can “subscribe” by becoming a LUNGevity Foundation monthly donor. A monthly donation to LUNGevity brings hope to the lung cancer community and their loved ones by funding lifesaving research and vital patient programs. A monthly gift of any amount adds up to a major impact when we give as a community and commit to giving monthly. Help keep the momentum of Lung Cancer Hope Month going all year long by subscribing today. New award program funds research to address health disparities in lung cancerLUNGevity recently launched the LUNGevity Health Equity for Communities Research Award, which aims to fund research that will have a direct impact on disparities in lung cancer care, including screening, biomarker testing, inclusion in clinical research, access to treatment, and more. The award will support young investigators interested in community-based participatory research whose projects promote health equity in lung cancer. According to Jeanne Regnante, LUNGevity’s Chief Health Equity and Diversity Officer, “Community-based participatory research brings together researchers and the community as equals. It is essential that the voices of the community have equal say in the proposed research question, process, strategies, and solutions.” This new award is the latest addition to the Foundation’s robust research portfolio, which includes translational science research awards and patient-focused research. This year, the Foundation also launched three new translational science research awards to support research from and/or for underrepresented populations, including veterans.
