Wine of the Weekend

Scheid Vineyards VDR (Very Dark Red) 2018

There’s nothing like getting snowed in to have you pulling out the recipes for hearty stews, rich soups, and other comfort foods that fill and warm you up. You’ll need a big wine to match those big flavours and Scheid Vineyards VDR (Very Dark Red) 2018 has all the flavour and structure you’ll need. It’s time to fill up the slow cooker and shovel your way to the LCBO to grab a bottle!

Tasting Notes: VDR is a blend of 60% Petit Verdot and 40% Petite Sirah. Both these varieties are thick skinned grapes, giving the final wine loads of colour (it is called Very Dark Red) and loads of tannin. Big black currant and black raspberry flavours cruise across the palate, riding a wave of soft, supple tannins and a light floral touch, for a smooth delivery and a long, luxurious finish.

Enjoy With: Hearty stews or chili, roasted or braised red meats, Shepherd’s pie, sausages and strong aged cheeses. Think BIG flavours!

Style: A medium-bodied, fruity, red wine.

Terroir/Region: Hailing from the southern reaches of Monterey County and brushing the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains, the vineyards Scheid sources VDR from are in a small pocket of the county that sees big temperature swings. Evening temperatures can differ from daytime by more than 10 degrees Celsius, allowing the grapes to build big flavours during the day and maintaining refreshing acidity overnight.

Producer: Scheid Vineyards takes sustainability as seriously as it takes its winemaking. A Certified Sustainable property, the winery gets all its power from a wind turbine on site, which also produces enough juice (pun intended) to power 125 homes in the community!

Availability: Scheid Vineyards VDR 2018 is available in Vintages or for online ordering on Saturday, January 22 but some stores may already have it on shelf. Stock up now to last you until the snow melts!
