This is Your Captain Speaking

Hi everyone and welcome to another edition of the Captains newsletter - yes it's only two weeks after the last newsletter and a day early for the August edition, but things are coming at us thick and fast as we head into the last six and a half weeks of the winter season.

First up an update on Australia's progress at the Olympics - all crews are progressing well and at this stage are still in the medal hunt. The W8+ with our own Hannah Vermeersch came second in their heat (watched by another motley crew of supporters who made page 7 of yesterday's West Australian newspaper), and will be racing in the repechage this afternoon at 5:50pm Perth time.

Secondly a huge thanks to all of the volunteers who helped out at the WARC Pennant Regatta a week ago. It was a huge success on the fundraising front and the umpires have reported everything ran smoothly. Well done! Our second - and final - regatta hosting of the year is the Masters regatta on Sunday September 2nd (yes, Fathers Day) which runs from 9:00am-12:30pm so expect another call-out for volunteers soon.

Cheers,
Mike Jones
WARC Captain

Boat Naming - Saturday August 4th, 9:00am

We've been lucky enough to purchase a number of new boats recently, and will be holding a small boat-naming ceremony in front of the club's boatshed this Saturday morning at 9:00am to name the following boats:

Tom Dadour (WARC "Grumpies" 4-)
Tim James (2-)
Two club sculls

All WARC members, friends and family old and new are welcome to attend, particularly those who rowed during Tim's time at the club, so please come down if you can.

Boat Race Officials Course - Wednesday August 15th, 6:00pm

A number of you asked for information about the Level 1 Umpiring Course being held by Rowing WA on Wed Aug 15 at 6pm, at Canning Bridge (Upstairs).

RWA are looking for people willing to do the Level 1 course and make themselves available on 3-4 mornings or afternoons a year - that's all!

I am assisting with this project as I don't want to see an absolute crisis occur where we can't have regattas because there are not enough officials to run them. I am also going to create a schedule for 2013 so that everyone knows ahead of time what dates they are volunteering so that if something occurs they can change to another date.

This is a fun thing to do and it's a great way to be involved in a way that gives something back to the sport. If you start umpiring you may just find it's a bit more addictive than you thought and, as Peta said at the weekend, this could be your ticket to the Olympic Games one day!

If you are interested in doing the course please fill out the form on the code of Ethics, let me know you are going to attend and bring the form on the night - you can find the required forms at: BRO Course Outline and Code of Ethics.

There is no charge for this course.

Thanks so much in advance for your enthusiasm.

WARC & RWA Annual Dinners - Save the Dates

The date of the WARC Annual Dinner has changed from the date advertised at the start of the season due to the availability of the club's function room - the new date is

Saturday September 22nd
WARC Boatshed

Further details will be released closer to the date. For the uninitiated, the club's annual dinner is a formal dinner and awards night where we reflect on the past season and recognise our best and brightest. Tickets will be limited and the evening is usually a sell-out.

As well as the WARC annual dinner, Rowing WA are celebrating the return of the Western Australian Olympians by holding its State Championship Dinner on 29th August 2012.

Date: 29th August 2012
Time: 6.30 pm for 7.00 pm start
Venue: Canning Bridge Rowing Centre
Price: $60.00 per ticket includes three course meal.
Drinks to be purchased at the Bar.
Tickets must be purchased and paid for by 25th August, 2012.

Your ticket includes a $10.00 raffle ticket for a return trip to Europe flying Singapore Airlines.

To purchase your tickets please contact Pierre Pougnault or Deone Denner at the Rowing WA office on 9364 3905 or admin@rowingwa.asn.au.

Equipment Update - Mens 8+

Unfortunately, the lightweight four advertised in the last newsletter had already been sold before we were able to put an offer in.

However, there is some good news as Rowing WA have confirmed Westies will be the recipients of a brand new Empacher mens 8+ later this year. The boat will be half-funded by Rowing WA and used as the state Mens Youth 8+ for four years, but will be used by the club for the majority of the year. The boat is due to arrive in October or November, depending on shipping.

With a total price tag of over $46000, this is a significant expense for the club, and any and all donations would be gratefully accepted. All donations are also tax-deductible via the Australian Sports Fund. If you would like to make a donation, please contact me at captain@warowingclub.org.
