PAKISTAN’S WAQAR YOUNIS - BRADMAN HONOUREE 2019

The Bradman Foundation was honoured to induct the great Waqar Younis at this year’s Gala Dinner for his great legacy & service to cricket, both on & off the field. Held at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground, the night was attended by over 400 members and their guests. Waqar is one of Pakistan’s greatest cricketer’s, the first Pakistani in the Bradman Honouree 13 year history, and truly a worthy recipient!

On top of an illustrious playing career, plus an outstanding coaching career in recent years, Waqar Younis was 1992 Wisden Cricketer of the Year! He was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2013, only the 5th Pakistani so honoured. In 2019, he received the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s 2nd highest civilian honour! Instigated in 2006 by our former Patron and cricket legend, Richie Benaud OBE, the Bradman Honouree is a senior international cricketer who succeeded the game at the highest level.

They played cricket in the right spirit and demonstrated discernable personal character while continuing to serve the game in retirement. The Honouree’s conduct and character, on balance, exemplifies Sir Donald Bradman’s own example on and off the field. We are honoured to confirm the enduring legacy and character of Waqar Younis this year, before his family and distinguished guests.

THANK YOU LISA STHALEKAR

We were honoured to have Aussie cricket legend and cricket commentator Lisa Sthalekar pay tribute to Waqar Younis on the night. The star-studded evening was also hosted by Masters of Ceremonies Kath Loughnan and Brendon Julian of Fox Sports Australia. Lisa is also our Museum Heritage Ambassador.

BOB HAWKE TRIBUTE BY JOHN HOWARD

A moving tribute was paid to the late Bob Hawke by John Howard, Australia’s former Prime Minister and Bradman Foundation Patron. Mr Howard shared a touching speech with Bob Hawke’s granddaughter, Ms Sophie Taylor-Price. She was presented a framed photo of Bob Hawke with his long-time friend Sir Donald Bradman, taken at the launch of The Bradman Albums, 10 October 1987. In a touching sentiment, the image was also signed by John Howard on the night.

2005 PAKISTAN BALL

In another great moment of the night, John Howard was reunited with ‘The Ball’ which he played with in a game of cricket in 2005, whilst visiting ADF & RAAF servicemen & women in Pakistan who were providing support for their peoples after earthquakes affected the region.

Mr Howard, who was then Prime Minister, was suddenly presented with this makeshift ball - made of electrical tape and other synthetic materials - and asked by ADF/RAAF to play an impromptu game of cricket. Whilst the deliveries weren’t penetrating Mr Howard more than made amends when batting. The scene was caught on camera and has become one of the most well-known and widely played cricket matches in Australian news and YouTube. We were thrilled to have been able to have the RAAF’s Sgt Michael ‘Gunny’ Gunn join us last night to present this ball to John Howard as Patron of Bradman Museum, much to his and the audience’s delight! The ball is currentlyon display in the main hall.

FIRST TIME JOINT BRADMAN SCHOLARSHIPS CELEBRATED IN 2019

Every year the Bradman Foundation offers Australian undergraduate students the opportunity to achieve their dreams of studying at an Australian university, whilst being able to still remain engaged in the cricket community. Since 1990 the scholarship has assisted 23 young Australian students with the costs associated in gaining a tertiary education, juggling study and cricket club commitments. It is open to all Australian undergraduate students who have a connection with cricket and continue their involvement while at university.

This year’s joint scholars, Kelly Rowland and Nathan Doyle (pictured with John Howard), were honoured at the Bradman Gala Dinner at the Sydney Cricket Ground. 2019 is the first time two scholars have been awarded in its 29 year history. The joint scholarship has been made possible by the great generosity of Ms Katie page, Board Director on the Bradman Foundation.

The Bradman Foundation is not looking for purely academic achievers, or the next Don Bradman! The emphasis when choosing a Bradman Scholar is placed on a blend of academic, sporting, personal, social skills and community involvement. They equally look for students who have great character and demonstrate leadership qualities, in addition they must demonstrate the character values which Sir Donald Bradman espoused in both word and deed.
