This is Your Captain Speaking

Hi everyone and welcome to another edition of the Captain's newsletter.

We're now two months into season 2011, and having set a solid base it's time to kick things up a gear as the regattas move to Champion Lakes and traditional pennent regattas dominate the program for the next few months. We also have a number of athletes interstate competing at the Australian Masters Rowing Championships, and a few fundraising events for our U23 international rowers, so onward and upward!

Cheers,
Mike Jones
WARC Captain

WARC needs BROs

One of the things that WARC often gets pulled up on is a lack of umpires, or Boat Race Officials (BROs). BROs perform a number of tasks at regattas, from being the starter on the line, driving a speedy for a marshal, being the umpire for a race or even simply sitting in the finishing tower and recording race times.

If you or a relative is interested in volunteering some of your time (it only has to be as little as a half-day at every 2nd or 3rd regatta), there is a BRO training course on at the RWA building at Canning Bridge on Tuesday 7 June at 6:30pm.

You don't need a skipper's ticket or rowing experience to become a BRO, so if there are any mums or dads out there who want to get involved, please come along!

I should also mention that any rower who also umpires during the day (say you race in the morning and umpire in the afternoon) will have their oar fees for the day waived.

WARC can also offer additional training and mentoring with an international-level umpire, and assist those interested in getting their skippers tickets.

If you're interested in coming along on Tuesday night or if you'd like to know more, please get in touch with me at captain@warowingclub.org.

U23 Quiz Night

WA's U23 athletes (including Westies' own Hannah Vermeersch and Matty Cochran) are holding a fundraiser quiz night before they fly out to the U23 World Championships in Amsterdam.

Please come down and support our athletes - being U23 athletes they receive very little support from Rowing Australia.

Think about this: you normally pay $5-$10 for seat fees at each regatta you race at. The U23's have to pay $7500 EACH in seat fees to race at U23 Worlds!

Raffle tickets will be available to buy as well as an auction featuring memorabilia signed by Western Australian Olympians.

Doors will open at 5:30pm for a 6pm start.
$20 per ticket, Limited numbers available, secure yours early.
To RSVP and secure your ticket or to organise a table of 8, email Ausrowing_quiznight@hotmail.com

For full details check out the event page here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=207558615949713

Speaking of our U23 athletes, I recently received the following update from Matt Cochran, who is training in Adelaide in the Aussie U23 Mens 8+ :

"Training is going really well. It's kinda like rowing in an 8 that goes fast and is so stable that the cox could be doing a lil jig in the middle of pieces and it would all be fine.

We fly out from Adelaide for Sydney in about 4 weeks for a pre-departure camp, then on to Amsterdam."

Good luck to all of WA's U23 athletes - you can find updates on the U23 worlds at http://www.worldrowing.com

AMRC

The WARC gentleman's club of Peter Klemm, Sten Campbell, Brad Scott and Mike Lane are currently at Lake Barrington, Tasmania, flying the flag for WARC at the Australian Masters Rowing Championships.

The team has already claimed some silverware on day one of competition, with Mike Lane winning Silver in the Mixed D Quad together with three scullers from Bunbury, and Pete Klemm also winning silver in the Mixed AB Double with Julia Dick from FRC.

Congratualtions gents and good luck for the remainder of the competition! You can track the team's progress at the ROMS AMRC page here: http://roms.rowingaustralia.com.au/Rowing/Regattas/RegattaView.aspx?id=879f0f0a-c68b-46f7-80d2-6dd5fca775a4
