Gateway85 will host a free online forum for the Norcross City Council candidates tonight at 6 p.m. via Zoom. All four candidates - including Josh Bare, Arlene Beckles, Andrew Hixson, and Sonia Lopez - will be participating in this online event, with Melvin Everson, Vice President of Economic Development at Gwinnett Technical College, moderating. The CID encourages voters to make informed decisions when heading to the polls this year. There are two important referendums on this year’s ballot regarding E-SPLOST and Transit. Early Voting is open now, so you can vote when it’s most convenient for you! Visit the Georgia My Voter Page to view dates and hours for early voting based on your specific polling location. You can also request an absentee ballot prior to Friday, October 30 to vote by mail! And remember, Tuesday, November 3 is the
last day to ensure your voice is heard in the 2020 Presidential Election.
Incredible Corridor Study
This study focuses on developing long-range alternatives to address traffic congestion, bicycle and pedestrian connectivity, and transit. Pond, the consultant hired for this study, is currently in the process of conducting a series of one-on-one stakeholder interviews to further vet these alternatives. Once the interviews are complete, Pond will perform a technical analysis of the identified alternatives in order to develop project recommendations for the area.
The CID is working in conjunction with Gwinnett County and the City of Norcross on the renewal of two State Opportunity Zones. One zone, located in Norcross, expired last year. The other zone, located in unincorporated Gwinnett on Jimmy Carter Boulevard, is set to expire this December. More information on this project to come.
Norcross Welcomes New City Manager
The City of Norcross recently named Eric Johnson as the new city manager. He succeeds long-time city manager Rudolph Smith, who retired last month after over twenty years of service to Norcross. The CID thanks Mr. Smith for his years of service and looks forward to working with Mr. Johnson in the future.
Gwinnett County Names New
Transportation Director
Gwinnett County recently appointed Lewis Cooksey as the incoming transportation director. The seat is currently held by Alan Chapman, who will retire after 23 years of service to the county. Cooksey will take over beginning October 31. The CID thanks Mr. Chapman for his years of service and looks forward to working with Mr. Cooksey.
Georgia Can't Wait for Freight
The amount of freight coming into Georgia’s ports is projected to double by 2028. More than 80% of that cargo will travel through the state’s highway system by truck. To support the significant increase in freight, it is important to begin investing in Georgia’s transportation infrastructure now. “Georgia Can’t Wait for Freight” is an educational campaign launched by Georgia Transportation Alliance to raise awareness and support economic growth. Gwinnett Cares Hosting Drive-Thru Job Fair
Gwinnett Cares is partnering with Goodwill of North Georgia to host a Park-N-Drive-Thru Job Fair at the Infinite Energy Center on Thursday, October 29th.
