I've shared in this newsletter that one good habit I've picked up is maximizing my commute time by listening to leadership and business audible books. With eight hours each week of drive time plus various flights and listening at 1.5X speed, I'm clocking about 700 hours of content/per year. But you don't have to do that because I'll share my top book recommendations for senior living leaders today. Shout out to ShiftMed for sponsoring today's newsletter. Short staffed? They can help.
Maximize your commute These books are must-reads and have completely changed how I lead, manage, inspire, and interact with my team and leaders. Here is the first half (in no particular order) of my top 12 book recommendations based on the over 200 I've listened to. Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss Leadership is all about listening, and no one has taught me more about listening than Chris Voss in this book. Whether having tough conversations with a team member, resident, or family member Voss's philosophy works every time. I've listened to this book a half dozen times and find new value each time. Favorite Quote "The beauty of empathy is that it doesn't demand that you agree with the other person's ideas." The 80/20 Principle by Richard Koch I guarantee you will feel like you're viewing your world through a different set of eyes after learning the 80/20 Principle. Learn and teach your team how to work smarter and more efficiently. Learn how to achieve more by doing less. Favorite Quote "80% of the results come from 20% of the causes. A few things are important; most are not." The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz Although this book takes place in Silicon Valley, the lessons transcend the tech world. Ben's straight-to-the-point real-world advice and view on leading through a tremendous change and disaster feel relevant to what we do every day. Favorite Quote "There are no shortcuts to knowledge, especially knowledge gained from personal experience. Following conventional wisdom and relying on shortcuts can be worse than knowing nothing at all." The 4 Disciplines of Execution by Sean Covey Sean teaches you how to go from knowledge and strategy to getting sh!t done and producing results. This is a must-read for your entire team and will change how you run your community. Favorite Quote "People play differently when they are keeping score. It's not about you keeping score for them." Grit by Angela Duckworth This one's an actual gut check for when you need it most. How about when you're almost three years into a global pandemic and experiencing the worst labor market we've ever seen? Favorite Quote "The main thing is that greatness is doable. Greatness is many, many individual feats, and each of them is doable." The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy The smallest daily choices develop into habits and, in return, who you are. It's not about making giant leaps towards your goals but rather moving towards them consistently. Darren helps you build daily habits that develop the person you want to be. Favorite Quote "You alone are responsible for what you do, don't do, or how you respond to what's done to you."
