Government needs to act urgently on alcohol: AMA (WA)

The State Government should implement the key recommendations of the review of the Liquor Control Act without delay, the Australian Medical Association (WA) said.

“The recommendations made by the reviewers are eminently sensible and would be a huge leap forward in the battle to reduce the harm of alcohol while taking an adult approach to its responsible supply and use,” AMA (WA) President Dr Richard Choong said.

AMA welcomes new interns for 2014

The AMA extends a warm welcome to the new cohort of interns who have recently completed their Intern Orientation. The AMA (WA) President and Council welcomes you to the profession and trusts that you will find your career choice and the experience of medicine a rewarding one.

RFDS Agreement secured

The Association is pleased to advise that the Royal Flying Doctors (Western Operations) AMA Medical Practitioners Agreement 2013 (the Agreement) was registered by the Fair Work Commission on 8 January 2013.

A summary of the key changes made is as follows:
• An 11 per cent increase to base salary over three years
• An 11 per cent increase to the Senior Medical Officer Allowance over three years
• An 11 per cent increase to the On-Call Allowance over three years
• An agreement to enforce the 10-hour break provision and ensure there is support for its practice.

During the negotiations RFDS had flagged several areas in which they wanted to introduce major changes:• Remove the ability for the Performance Bonus to be taken as leave

• Require practitioners to contribute towards the cost of providing housing
• Require practitioners to fill in time sheets after each shift.

The Association successfully negotiated to ensure that the above claims were not included in the Agreement.

Expert Medical Evidence and Medical Records

If you are called to give evidence in court, how do you ensure that you are properly prepared? What is your role, can you give evidence that is detrimental to your patient, will you be paid, can you be sued for being negligent in the evidence you give?

Medical record keeping is a professional responsibility. Who owns the records, do you have to give your patient full access to the records, what records are they entitled to, do you have to correct errors in the records, what if you believe it’s not in the best interest of the patient to see their records, and can you charge a fee to allow the inspection of records?

If these are the questions you need answers to,  you should attend this seminar.

Date: Wednesday, 19 February 2014

Venue: AMA (WA), Nedlands
Time: 6pm for a 6:30pm start

This seminar will cover what you need to know about appearing at a coronial inquest from both the perspective of the Office of the State Coroner and a medical defence organisation.
Doctors – of all specialties – are the most likely of any profession to be called on to give evidence at a coronial inquest.

This event is of particular importance for doctors of all specialties, especially interns, residents and registrars.
