Elevate your leadership Empathy is defined as the ability to recognize the feelings or perspectives of another individual. Tactical empathy takes it a step further as the ability to recognize and verbally acknowledge another perspective through labeling. Tactical empathy is at the core of great leadership. In addition, it's essential when caring for others. Fortunately, you can take actions to promote empathy within your culture while simultaneously helping your team connect. Practicing empathy will make you and your team better leaders and caregivers. Create your personal care plan Gather your team for the exercise of creating and sharing your personal care plan. The exercise is as easy as completing the following sentence repeatedly and writing down your preferences until you're satisfied that your needs and personality are captured. If I can no longer do it for myself, please help me... For example If I can no longer do it for myself, please help me take a short walk outside first thing in the morning, no matter the weather. The fresh air helps me start the day on the right foot. If I can no longer do it for myself, please help me bake each week. Baking sweets is one of my favorite things to do. Give the group several minutes to create their personal care plan. At the end of each daily stand-up meeting, ask a team member to share a piece of their plan. Encourage your leaders to share pieces of their plans with their teams, repeating the exercise throughout the organization with all team members. Consistency in sharing is critical. Over time you will build the foundation of an empathetic culture by intentionally seeking to understand and acknowledge where others are coming from and what is important to them—empathy towards each other and those we serve. The best of us will also use this opportunity to learn personalized ways to show gratitude to our teams.
