October 2019 UpdateWelcome to the October edition of the SEA CAPE newsletter. Sixteen tertiary students from across New Zealand have been selected to go on our Tertiary Market Immersion Programme in January 2020 to Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. They will be guided by academic mentors to work on four projects to develop recommendations for New Zealand businesses for working in the region. Our suite of three Market Readiness Programme modules continues to be well received across NZ regions. October and November will see us doing more of these. Keep an eye out for the dates. In September, 10 talented high school students took part in our BizVenture programme to Thailand. Closer to home, the Market Insights Programme concluded its 2019 edition in Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton this month. SEA CAPE is also involved in a partnership with the ASEAN Business Alliance, which launched its inaugural conference in Bangkok in September. This was followed by the biennial ASEAN Forum in Auckland. Read more about these and other updates in this edition. I hope you will find something that excites you in our array of SEA CAPE activities. The theme of this year’s conference was 'Boosting Connectivity Across ASEAN'. The second event was the ASEAN Forum which took place on 17 September 2019 at Auckland University of Technology. I am Antje Fiedler, a Senior Lecturer at the Graduate School of Management, University of Auckland. I teach on both the MBA and Masters program in the area of international business and strategy. I also have done extensive research on growth, innovation and internationalization of NZ SMEs, with a particular focus on emerging Asia. What is your connection with SEA CAPE? I have been involved in the development and delivery of business workshops for the Market Readiness Programme (MRP). These workshops provide an opportunity for practitioners to deepen their understanding of doing business in Southeast Asian markets, and to share their own experience with peers. I am also an academic advisor of the Southeast Asia CAPE. Tell us about your favourite SEA CAPE memory? This is difficult to pick because I have plenty of good memories. My favourite memories would be the many conversations with New Zealand exporters sharing their stories of doing business in Southeast Asia markets. I have learned many valuable, down-to earth practical lessons that really helped me to better understand this diverse and dynamic region. If you could drop everything and travel to any Southeast Asian country right now, which one would you choose, and why? Without a doubt Cambodia. Set in a lush rain forest, the temples of Angkor Wat are magical. The energy and light is difficult to describe, but gave me a real sense of adventure and peace at the same time. Also, Cambodians are very warm and friendly which made my trip to Cambodia unforgettable, and I would love to go back anytime. New to the SEA CAPE mailing list?
