NEW - Upcoming Presentations

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

The state has put together a webinar on Adverse Childhood Experiences to be facilitated by Patrick Sidmore from the Advisory Board on Alcoholism & Drug Abuse, and James Gallanos from the DBH Prevention & Early Intervention Section. The webinar is November 19th from 3:00 - 4:30PM and will be recorded and uploaded to the SPF website. Devon has sent the e-mail announcement for this and will follow-up with the webinar information.

The Alcoholic Beverage Control Board - Get Informed on Alcohol Regulation

As you begin to look for strategies to prevent youth alcohol use and reduce adult heavy and binge drinking, some of your strategies may include alcohol regulation. This presentation by Shirley Cote, Director of the Alaska Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and member of SPF Advisory Council, will discuss state laws related to alcohol control and how to have a voice in local decistion making. This will be a teleconference scheduled for Thursday, December 13th from 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM. Efforts will be made to send grantees a copy of the ABC Board Booklet covering state alcohol regulation laws prior to the call.

What is the ABC Board and what do they do?
How is alcohol regulated in Alaska?
What alcohol issues are regulated at the state level?
What is possible at the local or municipal level, in terms of regulation, advocacy, decision-making regarding how many outlets there are, new licenses, etc?
How can a community interact with and give comment to the ABC Board about what happens in their community?

Site Visits & Current Activity

Yakutat – Susie and Beth went to Yakutat at the beginning of October, and worked with SPF staff members on refining their adult logic model. They are currently in the process of collecting additional data that was identified as necessary through the site visit discussion. They will be completing their youth logic model in the coming weeks.

Sitka – Beth and Karen went to Sitka and met with SEARHC on Oct 29th and had rich discussions with SPF staff as well as an active community member on updating their community level logic model and discussing possible strategies they would like to use.

Nome – Shelly and Sherrie traveled to Nome on Nov. 14th for two days of strategy brainstorming with the Bering Strait CAST Wellness Partners. They had a great turnout with 36 coalition members coming to day one of strategic planning!

Homer – The Homer Prevention Project has been actively meeting with the Advisory Workgroup (coalition) to revisit and refine the combined logic model and discuss possible strategy options. The HPP Team and Susie will be meeting on Dec 7 and 8 to focus on strategic planning steps.

Fairbanks – Sylvan and Karen will be assisting with the next coalition meeting, on November 28. Diane will also be able to attend that meeting.

Wrangell/Petersburg – Karen and Sherrie visited Petersburg on Oct. 15th and met with SPF staff to work on the community level logic model and weigh possible strategies. As an extra bonus, we were invited to attend the municipal assembly meeting and see the staff’s presentation on their SPF progress so far, as well as a guest visit on our meetings from the local police chief.

Reminder - Grantee Only Listserv

To respond to the request from grantees at the Anchorage training in September, Karen created a grantee-only listserv, to have a means of communications just for grantees. This is a tool for you to ask each other questions, share information, and learn from one another. Invitations to this site were sent out on 10/25/12 to each project director and local evaluation with instructions for how to join. Please let us know if we can help make this tool more valuable for you or if you have ideas for how you would like to communicate more effectively with each other.
